Universal and Dark Horse Get Hitched
Filed under: Deals, Fandom, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Universal Pictures and Dark Horse Entertainment have struck a three year production and distribution deal. Universal now has creative access to Dark Horse's entire stable (pardon the pun) of characters and properties, as well as anything the company aquires in the hopes of turning it into a film. In return, Dark Horse gains a permanent studio home for all future properties, and the option to distribute their own films through Universal. Dark Horse has been responsible for publishing some of the cooler comics in the past few years -- but their movie output has been less than stellar. For every Hellboy, there's been a Son of the Mask and Alien vs Predator. Maybe a partnership with Universal will change that.
So many Dark Horse properties are in creative limbo now that I am really curious to see what's going to happen to them. Can Universal buy back the rights to Sin City so the sequel can be made? Lone Wolf and Cub? I know I am going to be wrong on who owns what, it's one of those days where Google is providing nothing in the way of reliable information -- and Dark Horse Entertainment only lists Hellboy II as their upcoming project, which is no help. Feel free to refresh my memory.
At any rate, I wonder if it means we'll see Frank Miller directing Martha Washington one of these days. I don't think that's been optioned yet.

DH also make Stephen King's Dark Tower comics/graphic novels, so in light of this new development I'd be happy to see the rights to the Dark Tower open to Universal and some kind of movie struck up. I think it's an arc of a story worthy of celluloid.
I did hear something about that a while back now as I think about it, but this makes it that much more possible.

Uhh... Rufus. The Dark Tower comics are published by Marvel.

Oh... mmm... yeah... good point... well I bet they would suck anyway. Knowing common luck, we'd get Ratner himself directing it with 'Jackie' as The Gunslinger.

Dark Horse published AKIRA for awhile. I heard Warner Bros. was making the live action version of AKIRA. Would Universal make a live action version also?

Okay. So Fox made Firefly, then cancelled it, whereupon (after a couple of years) Universal picked up the rights and made Serenity. Then Dark Horse made the comics. Now Universal has Dark Horse. So University has Serenity. Again. Right?
Not sure it's significant, but it's kinda funny.

Ha, I thought the same thing! Who knows, maybe we'll see a revival. It would be hilarious if that's how Firefly managed to come back.
That's the weird thing about this deal, really. So many of Dark Horse's comics are movie based, and thus owned by other studios, or are already optioned. It seems like bad timing.

I don't think we can assume everything Dark Horse ever released is simply a mew movie option for Universal.
For example, I doubt any of the Star Wars tales will be touchable. Also, all the Alien movies are 20th Century Fox. There's probably many more examples...
