First Look: Benicio Del Toro as 'The Wolfman!'

Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled the first two photos (second pic after the jump) of Benicio Del Toro as The Wolfman, along with a pretty sweet interview with famed makeup artist Rick Baker on how he went about updating the look 67 years after the first big-screen Wolfman hit theaters. Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park 3) directs this latest version, which also stars Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. The makeup looks absolutely insane; especially in the second photo which creeps the living hell out of me. Do we even need to tell you the story? Dude becomes a wolfman and craziness ensues. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait all the way until February 13, 2009 to watch this sucker come to life in theaters.
Head over to EW to check out larger versions of each pic, as well as to read that Rick Baker interview.

Sadly, I'm not. I think the top row of teeth is too low down and should be moved up maybe 1/4" or so and that would make a huge difference. The angle of the bottom row makes it seem as though he can't close his mouth and that would take away from the scary.
I guess that I should also mention that I'm a huge purist, with The Wolfman being one of my favorite films ever. That being said, I personally think my liking this makeup is a huge step forward for me.

Speaking as a Purist, you're probably right. When I first saw the pictures, I just thought to myself that if I met Wolfman in the woods, this is what I would expect him to look like - teeth and all. This really is an amazing example of the art of makeup. I, too, have a love and soft spot in my heart for the early Wolfman movies of years gone by. And, I always loved that old gypsy woman who appeared in the fog in the woods with all the cryptic lines of dialogue. When this new version of Wolfman comes out, I'm sure it will be worth a trip to the theater a few miles from my house. I have a tendency to go with flow of fantasy and make believe when it comes to movies. I want to go to a place where I can forget the unpaid bills laying on the kitchen cabinet and the nagging question of what the heck to fix for supper. Movies are a magic carpet ride to take me someplace far away, so I am probably not a Purist; but we both love movies.

Since people have mentioned the teeth, it is interesting to note that the tooth count and proportions of the canines match those of a wolf, but the shape of the teeth (other than the canines) look to be curiously more human. We have a very aggresive omnivore here. Interesting combination of traits between the human and the wolf. Be interesting to see how the movie plays out.
