Your First Look At Snake Eyes in 'G.I. Joe!'
Filed under: Action, Classics, Paramount, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images

And buried somewhere under all that is Ray Park, who is a real Phantom of the Opera when it comes to his onscreen work.
G.I. Joe is a world unknown to me (it was a boy thing, a line that I never could bring myself to cross like I could with X-Men and Ninja Turtles), but I am told it is an accurate representation of his look in the G.I. Joe comic book. It's pretty cool. I think most action heroes should carry a katana and a gun, as you're likely to need one or the other in any given fight.
Do you like it? Hate it? Is this the Snake Eyes you've always envisioned? It is a glimpse of what you'll see August 7th, 2009 when G.I. Joe hits the big screen.

huh?
Are you trying to allude to him playing Darth Maul in 'The Phantom Menace' or saying he played the Phantom of the Opera (which was Gerard Butler)?

...or does she mean that, like the Phantom of the Opera, Ray Park is usually found 'behind the mask' of the parts he plays.
Toad, Darth Maul, this guy... he's hardly a well known face because of the fact that he is often the physical artist as opposed to the line-deliverer ;)
Perhaps?

I know Butler was in Phantom -- I have held one of his masks! ;)
I was referring to the fact that Park rarely ever shows his face on screen. He's always buried under make-up or a mask -- Darth Maul, Toad, the Headless Horseman, and Snake Eyes.
I guess Lon Chaney Sr. might have been a better reference.

Oh yeah, and I was going to say although I don't know G.I. Joe or Snake Eyes that well, this guy looks swell. The black, the red, the gun, the blade, the snapy visor thing... yeah... mmm... nice.

That's because Snake Eyes is one of the 'Joes and not Cobra.

Wow. A ninja with a sword in one hand and a gun in the other. Okay...

Edward, Snake Eyes always had both swords and a gun (typically an Uzi) as an action figure and in the comics. Just how he was.
I dig it as it's a pretty straight forward representation of the second Snake Eyes uniform (first didn't have the ribbed goggles across his eyes). My only problem is with the logo on his upper arm. That is actually supposed to be a tattoo on his forearm. One he shares with (POTENTIAL SPOILERS HERE) his "brother" Storm Shadow. Both were trained by the same clan of ninja, post Vietnam, and the tattoo is the mark of this clan. I hate to be the purist here, but that tattoo was the first indication of some relationship the underlies the rivalry between the two. I believe it first showed in the original run of comics, #21, and then was explained in a two-issue arc in #26 and 27.
Yes, I'm a geek. I realize it. No need to rub it in.

No geek fear, Devils Due has brought GI Joe to a new generation of geeks, hell my wife got me into it.

Yeah, I noticed the clan symbol on his shoulder too. It's supposed to be tattooed on his forearm (and Storm Shadow's.)
But other than that, it's a pretty accurate depiction, and I'm relatively jazzed about the movie.
Ray Park is really short though. Put it this way: he was short enough to play the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow.

I grew up watching G.I. Joes and playing with the toys. Honestly I was a little hesitant about a movie being made out of it because of how supremely dissapointed ive been in the big-screen renditions of other staples from my childhood entertainment. But this photo eases some of my hesitant feelings cause this looks straight up bad-ass.

Instead of speculating as to whether he looks correct, why not just compare him to the original?

He looks a little modernized, but definitely in the spirit of the original.

Maybe he has his real tattoo under all that black rubber. I know absolutely nothing about GI Joe or most comic book characters outside of X-Men, but this guy is a scary bad ass and makes me want to see the movie.
