Sarah Marshall Hates Sarah Marshall

You've no doubt seen the ad campaign for Forgetting Sarah Marshall by now. Instead of a traditional poster, cities across the country have been littered with all-white signs that read (in black lettering), "You Suck Sarah Marshall" or "My Mom Always Hated You Sarah Marshall." Naturally, those not "in the know" may think these signs are a personal attack on one Sarah Marshall, who, in reality, is played by the adorable Kristen Bell in the film. Well, it's happened. Like, a lot.According to The Daily News, a bunch of women from New York City -- who also happened to be named Sarah Marshall -- are definitely feeling the heat from this ad campaign. One girl actually got a phone call from her ex saying, "I don't know who's doing this, but it's not me." One ad which reads, "You DO look fat in those jeans Sarah Marshall" has some women signing up for gym classes, and applying extra make-up in the morning. Another Sarah Marshall says, "You see ... words like 'hate' and 'suck' with your name over and over again. It just doesn't feel pleasant inside." It does seem, though, that the younger the Sarah Marshall, the better. One girl who's 27 says her fourth-grade class constantly ask for her autograph.
What do you think about the ad campaign? And if you're a Sarah Marshall, definitely chime in below. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which happens to be one helluva funny flick) hits theaters on April 18.

For some odd reason, I really hadn't thought about the fact that Sarah Marshall isn't a very uncommon sounding name.
So maybe Jason Seigel shoulda found a different name, or maybe they should split the ads into two boxes, one side as the ad is, and one with a logo or movie promotion of some sort.
However, to think some women are hurt inside seeing those ads is a little laughable. I mean, especially if they know it's a movie (and if they looked closely the ad shows "IHateSarahMarshall.com." They could go there and figure out it's a movie with some looking).

From the LA Times (via Zap2It): "We wanted people to ask the question 'Who is Sarah Marshall?' " says Adam Fogelson, president of marketing and distribution for Universal Pictures. "And everything we hoped would happen has come to pass."
I would hope he just means the buzz, and not making a bunch of real life SM's feel crappy about themselves or get confused drama.

or maybe people could stop being such narcissitic paranoids that they would think an ex bf/gf would hate them that much that they would take out a billboard.

This ad campaign just reinforces how important comma usage really is. "You suck Sarah Marshall" means something much different than "You suck, Sarah Marshall".

It's a terrible campaign. my fiancee and I keep seeing the billboards and talking about how stupid it was, and then were totally surprised last night when we saw the trailer and discovered that the movie looked really cute and funny. We were both really surprised. If the movie is actually good why would you choose an ad campaign that doesn't capitalize on that?

you'd have to be sort of quick to anger if you cant notice the big R rating on the bottom. so it seems that this is a case of people trying to make a big deal over a whole bunch of nothing. its like somebody named Bill being really mad about Kill Bill...

I can't help but feel sorry for the young Sarah Marshall, in second grade or junior high or even high school. Kids can be so cruel, and you can bet that for the rest of the school year Sarah Marshall will be made fun of.

unless the sarah marshall's of the world REALLY did do something REALLY BAD in their past relationships, then they have NOTHING to worry about. i agree with jesse, it could be worst. i mean seriously, if you're that hung up on yourself that you think a flyer that has your name on it is REALLY about you, then you deserve what's coming to you. for the rest of us that don't live under rocks, we get it. i DO want to see the movie, now, b/c i want to see how big a bitch this chick really is. the guy who wrote the movie, jason siegel, who happens to play a guy named marshall in his day job :p, wrote this movie and the break up scene was based off his own experience (being naked and thinking that she's there for a hook up only to find out she's not). so i wonder if this is 1) a bit of therapy for him and 2) a REALLY BIG payback at his "sarah marshall." seriously ppl, it's nice to be nice. you never know when that person will come back and use the all that AGAINST you in a MOVIE!
