Disney Breaks Biggest 'Back to the Future' Rule
Filed under: Deals, Disney, Scripts, Newsstand
To be fair, I haven't read the script for this -- but based on the description, it certainly seems like Disney is about to break Doc Brown's biggest (and most important) time-traveling rule. The Hollywood Reporter tells us Disney has picked up the spec script (yay for spec script surge!) Self-Guided, written by Jared Stern. So maybe we should blame Stern for this one, because his script centers on a man who "magically goes back to high school as a guidance counselor to give advice to his younger self." (I wonder if, while writing this, Stern pictured a slew of BTTF fanboys crying foul?)Mandeville Films' David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce, and there's currently no word on casting or a potential director. However, Lieberman was prepping the Disney rom-com The Proposal when he read this script, and since that film stars Ryan Reynolds, I wouldn't be surprised if Reynolds' name is first on the list. The actor seems to be heading in a new direction as of late; away from all those raunchy comedies and more toward playing adult characters.
So, are we far enough away from BTTF that this shouldn't present a problem? We're not in Zemeckis' world anymore, so why not ... right? (I'd be lying, though, if I said a part of me wasn't kinda ticked off.)

they're not merely breaking doc's rule - they're toying with the fabric of reality as we know it. bttf is based solely on logical principles and any attempt to subvert them will end in utter chaos and ruin (see: bttf 2 and hp: tpoa).

Yeah, but you can also look at it that there is no way to go back and mess with time because time is constant and you were always meant to go back.

You know, these days I can't get pissed at this news. I would if they were outright REMAKING BTTF...but who knows, maybe they will remake it soon enough like they are doing to everything these days...sigh

as of fan of richard kelly's work so far, I would say this movie has the potential to be awesome!
Donnie Darko and Southland Tales focus on tangent universe theories of time travel. I dig it.

Didn't Disney already break this "rule" before, with "Disney's The Kid"? Bruce Willis was the adult version of the Spencer Breslin character, wasn't he?
Besides, if you're going to suspend disbelief that the character can time travel is it that much of a stretch to buy into him being able to interact with his "other self"? I'd more likely be up in arms if the main character was traveling back in time to his parents' high school years.
