Matthew McConaughey is ... Magnum P.I.?

But now the big question still remains: Will he get to take his shirt off? According to Entertainment Weekly, Matthew McConaughey was offered the leading role of Thomas Magnum in Universal Pictures' adaptation of Magnum P.I. In fact, right this very second (and possibly shirtless) McConaughey is said to be reading over the script from writer-director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball); trying to decide whether or not he'd be a good fit. For those youngsters in the crowd, Magnum P.I. was a boss '80s TV show about a Navy Seal-turned-detective who liked Hawaiian shirts and big, porn mustaches. This isn't the first we've heard of McConaughey and Magnum P.I. All the way back in January of 2007, he was rumored to be up for the part -- a role that, at one point, was going to Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Vince Vaughn. And ... what about Tom Selleck? Will he get to play a part? Probably not. Back in 2006 (oh yes, this project has been lingering in the halls of Hollywood detention for quite some time), Selleck called the movie idea "stupid" and said he'd take no part in it. Heck yeah, Tom! Tell it like it is. But if they were to move ahead on this, I like McConaughey out of everyone. Keep in mind, they'll update it to a point where the only traces from the old TV show come in character names and cheesy Hawaiian shirts.
What do you think about a Magnum P.I. movie? Keep it or kill it?

if they did a 'real' on screen adaptation of the show i'd dig it. But if they do a ridiculous parody (a la McHale's Navy or The Brady Bunch movies), which i fear given the writer's credits, then not so much.
Funny part is i think McConaughey works either way

^^ +1. McConaughey does work either way. I hope they don't go the parody route...but they probably will.
I nominate the Acua NSX tagra to replace the Ferrari 308!

McConaughey will have the look but he isn't smooth. Or, rather, he isn't sophisticatedly smooth. He does goofy well, he does slimey well, he does stupid well. He does not do sophisticated or classy.
As for the NSX, why bring a horrifically outdated car with no soul in to replace a piece of Italian art? The NSX was competent, if dull. Now it's just dull.

You're being a snob. The 308 was a great looking car and drove well but I'd hardly call the NSX "souless" and dull.
In fact the 308 wasn't Ferrari's finest hour and was largely panned by the cognoscenti because of how downmarket they thought it brought brand. If it wasn't Magnum P.I. I doubt it would be as endearing as it is today.

"OH MY GOD!" - Jonathan Higgins
It's hard to believe that Donald Belisario, Glen Larson and Floyd Johnson would allow Rawson Thurber(&Co) to ignore what loyal Magnum, p.i. fans really want - A SERIOUS SCRIPT WITH TOM SELLECK AND THE REST OF THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES CAST MEMBERS!!
Come on Hollywood..put your egos on hold and make the most of a rare opportunity! The majority of movie goers that would pay to see a Magnum, p.i. movie are baby boomers that really miss the tv series. Nothing would please them more than to again see the characters(aged)of Magnum, Higgins, Rick and TC together on the big screen. A well written script that brings us into the characters lives as they are today(with all the original tv series cast members)would be embraced by Magnum,p.i. fans worldwide! There are actually websites and internet petitions that clearly make the point.."if it doesn't star Tom Selleck..and all of the original tv series cast members..we won't go see it!" (an example: Magnum,p.i. thread at FerrariChat.com - 50,000+ members worldwide!)
I personally will only PAY to see a Magnum, p.i. movie that pays tribute to the tv series. (and I most certainly wont't pay to see some ridiculous "Dukes of Hazzard" *@#!) Please don't let this film be some gross charicature for the MTV generation!!
