Really Creepy Teaser for 'Blindness' Surfaces
Filed under: Thrillers, Trailers and Clips
We thought this looked awesome last summer, and now we have some confirmation. MSN has posted a teaser trailer for Blindness, Fernando Meirelles' apocalyptic thriller based on the novel by José Saramago, and it creeps me out. The movie is about a blindness epidemic that sweeps through a city, afflicting everyone except one woman (Julianne Moore) who is apparently immune. She's then forced to feign blindness (Why? If no one else can see, what's the difference?) to care for her husband (Mark Ruffalo) as everything around them goes to hell. The tonal shift at the beginning of the teaser is genuinely startling, maybe because the upbeat music doesn't stop playing as you'd expect, or maybe because it deals with something that is one of this cinephile's worst nightmares. I like Meirelles' City of God as much as the next guy, but the real reason I'm excited for this is that the screenplay is written by Don McKellar, whose previous stab at depicting the end of the world, Last Night, is one of my favorite films (with one of the most perfect endings of all time). Blindness is expected to play the Toronto Film Festival this September, with a US release slated for October. Can anyone who's read the book give us some (non-spoiler) hints of what to expect?

Obviously you have no idea what the book is about. Blindness it´s a masterpiece of contemporary literature, it criticizes the way we choose to live under the status quo and it shows how cruel nature can be even under the worst of circumstances for everyone. Why she can see is the main reason for the whole movie!!! Hopefully it will be revealed with class, not an easy answer. There are parts of this book that could easily compete with the likes of I Am Legend (theme wise, not movie wise, of course) and 28 days later but I hope they don't over look the philosophical content just to make it scary.
I could go for this, contemplating the fact that in no way it can compete with the novel. I like Moore in the part, very cool.

Obviously I have no idea what the book is about -- I said as much. Also, I wasn't asking why she could see, but why she had to pretend to be blind if no one else could see.

I would hate to reveal a spoiler! Just consider that some people would do anything to stay close to their loved ones and I mean anything...

Trust me, this trailer won't seem creepy once you see the full movie, if it doesn't veer too far from the book.

Eugene, It doesn't seem your question was really answered. I have read the book and it's the scariest thing I have ever read in my whole life. SPOILER ALERT: The reason the doctor's wife pretends to be blind is in the beginning when the strange blindness epidemic begins like any other epidemic. Only a few handful are mysteriously blind at first. It is then noticed by the government and they start rounding these people up in a terrifying gestapo like way. The wife then pretends to be blind so she can go with her husband to wherever it is they are taking him.

I didn't realize I was asking for a spoiler, and I chose not to read yours... But I might pick up the book in the next week or two.

Eugene,
I too think LAST NIGHT (one of my favorite films of all time as well) features one of the most perfect endings.
And as for non-spoiler indications about BLINDNESS? Hang on... it's a tough ride!

Promise no more posts here, enough is enough. I think it's important to enjoy movies without too much info, it´s a bad thing mass media brought to the world. It's a great story with many sides to it...

I wouldn't consider the answer you got to be a spoiler, Eugene. But to answer your question, the teaser alone shows that she's not the only one that's not blind.
