More Bad News for Tom Cruise and 'Valkyrie'
Filed under: Drama, United Artists, Tom Cruise, Movie Marketing, War
So we all know that Tom Cruise jokes are getting a little old, but you can't deny it's been fascinating to watch one of the most powerful guys in movies have a "freak out" and be forced to watch all his star-worship fade away. According to Fox News' Roger Friedman, it's not looking good for Bryan Singer's historical drama, Valkyrie. According to Friedman, "Valkyrie is a set up for not only failure, but ridicule." Friedman goes on to take shots at Cruise's attempts at a German accent and even Singer and Christopher McQuarrie's dialog gets a few (dis) honorable mentions. Although, to be fair, I wouldn't count on a gossip reporter from Fox to be the final word on film criticism. Friedman joins the chorus of critics who think that Valkyrie will not only fail to improve Cruise's current Hollywood standing, but that it will further add another nail to his box office coffin. Cruise still has a few more chances to pull himself out of this mess: First up will be a cameo in Tropic Thunder, then it's on to a full-on attempt at comedy with director Todd Phillips (Old School) in Men, and finally Cruise is expected to star alongside Ben Stiller in the buddy comedy, The Hardy Men (which I personally think has some potential). Who knows? Maybe he will finally be making people laugh at him on purpose. Valkyrie arrives in theaters on October 3rd.

I still love Tom and have during this whole "freak out" period, but Valkyrie looks agonizingly awful. It smells like a stinkbomb of moldy cheese. Like "Lions for Lambs", I'll be skipping this one too.
However, I'm anticipating catching Tom in "Tropic Thunder" and maybe whatever he does next year. I hope he gets back to doing audience-pleasing films. I'm not sure how much more of his boring melodrama, "statement" films I can take.

Tom Cruise has to understand he is not a good actor. I'm sorry, he isn't. He's okay at times, when the story is good enough, but other than that, not. He should stick with action films or producing, or I don't know, something that doesn't involve having actual acting talent, because he doesn't have much of that.

I must disagree, Claudia. He showed an immense amount of talent in Magnolia and Born on the 4th of July and won Golden Globes for both performances. Tom's problem since then has been his poor choice of roles.
BTW, I would also not take anything a critic from Fixed Noise says seriously. Friedman's been known to whore for Fox's films and trash others.

BTW, who is this "chorus of film critics" you mention? As far as I know, none of the big names have weighed in, and why should they? They haven't seen it and to slam it before it's been seen reeks of pettiness. If you're going to make a claim like this, at least back it up. It seems Cinematical is devolving into a gossip and hearsay blog.

Roger Friedman is a gossip columnist ala Star magazine not a movie critic. Is this still Cinematical site or now a trash paper like National Enquirer?
How can he see the film when U.A. is still finishing it up just filming the intro.of the film this March at a Southern Calif. desert? Friedman works for Fox network a network run by" fair and balanced Fox news" that is so Republican and hates everyone and everything liberal Hollywood.
Bill O'Riley is the leader of this Hollywood basher.
Please be fair and professional with your reports because all A-listers are failing to prove their worth at the box office.
Even Jeff Robinov at WB sees women as weak at the box office with many of them paid so much yet they bring so little at the B.O. i.e. Jodie Foster,Charlize Theron,Halle Barry,Nicole Kidman etc....
Same goes for many actors like Pitt,Clooney, Depp only opens big for popcorn films but serious films same with Tom Hanks dont open huge. Newsweek and Time magazine said Hollywood is entering into the era that major superstars are not really needed because its all about prequels, sequels, superheroes etc....
Tabloids and some retard group of the media dissed Tom Cruise Lions for Lambs as a flop when it met its budget so well while all anti war films flopped hard including the newest one by Ryan Phillippe.

Superman fans including myself have the script for the film and its uber-amazing. Really sad that the Academy keeps snubbing many real talents including Cruise.
Roger Friedman is no Roger Ebert film critic but a celeb rag lowlife. Im curious too the chorus of critics you claim are mocking this film when chorus of critics from Chud, moviehole, movies,Aintcoolnews,Joblo,Hollywood Reporter, the Australian press that visited the set are raving so much about this movie. Cruise Tropic Thunder cameo and early reviews for Valkyrie are nothing short of praises.
