'Emma' Goes Hardcore, Remixed Into Hip-Hop

In a few months, English professors across the world are going to be saying "Dear God, Jane Austen is rolling in her grave!" or "Thank heavens, Clueless is just too outdated to get the young kids reading."Variety reports that Screen Gems is planning a hip-hop musical re-imagining of Jane Austen's classic novel, Emma, from a screenplay by Tyger Williams. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink will be producing via their Benderspink shingle. Screen Gems head Clint Culpepper says he got the idea from watching Lil Mama's Lipgloss music video. Retitled Emme, It will take place in, surprise, an inner-city high school and will revolve around a stepbrother and sister. There will be 15 song and dance numbers.
Re-imaginings are all well and good, and certainly Austen is made over in all sorts of ways: Bride and Prejudice redid Pride and Prejudice as a Bollywood musical, and Bridget Jones was essentially a version set in modern London. I wince only because these dance movies tend to be rather disposable, and Clueless already updated the story so well. Culpepper disagrees, though: "Now it's urban. This is the way it should be reimagined in the new millennium."
I am having a blast thinking of what could be next. Sense and Sensibility as glam rock/pop a'la Moulin Rouge? Or maybe country, given the isolation of the Dashwood sisters. Northanger Abbey should be Goth rock for sure. And an indie rock Persuasion.
I don't think Jane Austen would be spinning in her grave, though. She's too cool for that. But I doubt she would have ever sold the film rights.

I feel ill at the very thought of hip hop Emma...If I were dead I'd be rolling in my grave. I fear any remaining lesson in the story will be lost in all that hip hop and never reach its urban audience, (if there even exists an audience for such a work). They will be more interested in how quickly they can download the songs and blast them in their ear drums via their ipod. God forbid one of the cast is an American Idol cast off, for they will fall to his/her feet to worship. Forget every picking up a book...

I am not racist at all, just don't like Hip Hop and I feel this type of adaptation of Emma would be a shame. I think the story would be lost in the conversion. Ton's of people like hip hop and American Idol, and ipods, they don't all live in urban areas, nor do all people who live in urban areas like those things. Since I myself am a minority, and live in an urban area, and have kids who have ipods, I feel your comment even more hurtfull. Just giving my opinion about how I don't think I'd like this type of adaptation of a favorite novel doesn't mean it won't turn out good, or that Jane Austin herself, a very free thinking independent woman might not think it was a smashing idea. I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong, as I happen to love all types of musicals. Got anything else you want to say?
