More Bad Buzz for 'Incredible Hulk'
Filed under: Box Office, Fandom, Trailers and Clips

Are some franchises cursed? That looks like the implication of today's article in The New York Times about the intense reactions to The Incredible Hulk, which has divided fans online and elsewhere ever since the trailer came out last month. According to reporter Brooks Barnes, the preview was released "to vanquish memories of the 2003 film." Instead, it resurrected them with complaints that the character looked too fake. Hollywood has acknowledged pre-release backlash before -- remember how Ain't It Cool News supposedly impacted the reception of Batman and Robin over a decade ago -- and they've adapted to it, as demonstrated by the way all the anti-Brett Ratner venom leading up to the release of X-Men: The Last Stand didn't affect its box office reception one bit.
Commercial prospects aside, it would've been nice if Marvel and Universal had turned to the source material to uncover the best possible Hulk material for the big screen. I've always felt that the Planet Hulk series (continuing now as World War Hulk), which found the Angry Green Giant on a foreign planet adapting to alien culture, does the best job of tapping into the character's fragility while simultaneously illustrating his ability to kick major ass. Plus, it brings other Marvel characters into the mix -- which is something the studios are trying out with the confirmed Tony Stark/Robert Downey, Jr. cameo in Incredible Hulk. Then again, maybe the best stories shouldn't get butchered by less-than-stellar adaptations. Remember the goofy symbiote in Spider-Man 3? I've tried to forget it.

"The monster was mute in Mr. Lee’s film, but this one speaks, a nod to the campy 1978-82 television series that starred Bill Bixby and the bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno (resplendent in green body paint)."
When the hell did Ferrigno speak in the tv series?

I second that. I don't recall the Hulk EVER talking in the series. Grunts and stuff sure... but never speech.

I thought it looked pretty good from the trailer (well . . . except for the CGIish Hulk at the end).

Well, the alien symbiote saga was goofy, and really awkward to impliment into a Spider-Man movie.

This is just an example of you just can't please some people. I found nothing wrong with the trailer it actually made wanna see the movie more and in the HD trailer it actually doesn't look bad.I thought initially that the scene in the Iron Man trailer where he fired the missile at the tank looked very fake but that was the early stages before it was refined and now I think it looks alot better. So that being said I think as it gets closer to release and the more time they have to refine the cg it will look even better , so people please reserve judgement until at least June.

For the love of Stan...IT IS FAKE. Your puny human brains are not capable of *actually* suspending your disbelief. It's the Hulk. He's green. It's from a comic book. You know it's not real. Quit bitchin' about the fraggin' CGI. You A) Don't know what you are talking about, and B) Don't know your floating point from your fully actuated lighting scenarios, and C) Couldn't render a frame of anything that looked remotely real. GO TO THE MOVIE AND ENJOY THE (fake) SPECTACLE.

I think what everyone's forgetting here is that - WE'VE SEEN THE WHOLE MOVIE IN THE TRAILER!!!!!
Spoiler-ish stuff below.
that's right kiddies - when the Abomination and Hulk meet up in NYC, that's the last 30 minutes of the movie according to the director. Really. Now we can save the money and not see it.
Not to mention - it's a HORRIBLE trailer. Really, doesn't look fun, doesn't look interesting in design, doesn't even have a one liner from a cast member. It's TOO serious. I know the Hulk is series serious and the blight of David Banner... yap, yap, yap.
The trailer doesn't make the movie look fun. So I'm not really interested.

So YOU'RE the type of person that makes movies like White Chicks sell. You hated the trailer because it didn't have a snappy one-liner from a character.
Just...WOW. I know all I need to know about you from that. WOW.

I've got a sneaky suspicion that after 'The Incredible Hulk' plays before audiences, Ang's 'Hulk' will be appreciated far more than most people give it credit for.
Just a hunch.
I'm pretty sure the fans will end of divided on the films (already kinda' the case, but it will probably be confirmed). If you like your Hulk to be a crerebral, tragic and Frankenstein film, Ang's 'Hulk' will be your fav, and if you like Hulk Smash and took a shining to the 'Ultimates' comic run, then I think 'The Incredible Hulk' will be your bag...
Ultimately, I'm a bit worried about this film. And, there is no way that John Hurt is Thunderbolt Ross. That role was owned by Sam Elliot.

Oops. Meant William Hurt.
I don't think John Hurt could go toe to toe with the big guy without a walker...

Watch the trailer in hi-def, or go see it playing in a theater. I saw it in front of Drillbit Taylor (I think thats what it was playing before) and the hulk at the end looked infinitely better than he did when I just clicked on the "watch trailer" link on moviefone. Its much much better than Lee's Hulk, and like someone else said, how in the hell do you make a 20 foot green monster (whose pants still freaking fit) to look "real"?
