Bud Cort Speaks Out Over Questionable Interview
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
At the end of last month, an interview with classic Harold and Maude star Bud Cort popped up on the Austin American-Statesman. It's rather ... biting -- and not because it was a discussion over breakfast. From the get-go, you can tell that interviewer Chris Garcia wasn't happy with the whole experience, in a way that brings to mind Steve Buscemi's take on the matter in Interview. I get the feeling that Garcia never wanted this interview, and that Cort picked up on it right away. The interview, as Wiley Wiggins pointed out in his blog, is definitely lacking in "meaningful content." Words used to describe Cort throughout the piece range from "picky and precise," to his clothing being "a snazzy shade of melancholy," to "A wounded ego is a big ego. Cort emanates an air of entitlement born of bad luck or bad choices or whatever it is that makes Hollywood such a torture chamber of heartache, anger and rejection." On the one hand, it seems like Garcia was shot down when he tried to navigate any path with the actor, but on the other, Cort doesn't seem to have been given much to work with -- unlike, say, this interview with DVDTalk.
Now, in a letter to the editor, Cort had this say: "The breakfast interview he concocted was not only malicious, it was inaccurate and contained downright falsehoods, which he had the gall to attribute to me." He goes on to discuss some of the interview and says: "I basically had to carry the ball during the entire conversation, which was tantamount to sitting with a sponge."
What do you think about the whole affair?

Being a resident of the Austin area, I have to say that I have never enjoyed Garcia's articles or reviews. I did not read the article in question, so I can not speak on how it came off. But I can say that Garcia always seems bored with the things he writes about.

You look at this article...WTF, all that stuff about breakfast? I mean, really, WTF? Is that supposed to be gonzo, with the runny eggs? No wonder the daily newspaper is dying--and it seems as if the only research Garcia did was to scan the IMBd fast and hope that Cort was going to go through a practiced recital ("Ruth Gordon was a saint!") of all his favorite stories. In a situation like this, what I'd do is get Cort to talk about things that interest him, so he'd talk: who cares if it's off the subject of film? Anything is better than slandering a reliable character actor for not being a shmoozer first thing in the morning.

Oh, and another thing. It's pretty funny that Bud Cort's birthname was "Walter Cox," when you consider that the man is today getting roles that the original Wally Cox would have got...I don't think Garcia got that point, though--

It was a very painful read, and one of the worst interviews I have ever read! I thought Mr. Garcia was a more professional writer than what he presented. I feel for Bud Cort that he had to sit through it. I was shocked by the condescending tone of it. Bud handled himself very well considering what he had to put up with. I'd have done a better job of it myself, for sure!!
Supposedly, Mr. Garcia read a few interviews in my Bud Cort fan site beforehand, but had he dropped me a line, I could have given him a heads-up about which articles would have best prepared him for his interview. He had such a rare opportunity to not only interview Bud, but to cover some new territory in his questionings of him. Now, I wonder if he really READ anything there at all!
From my research, Bud's not keen on doing interviews (for the very reason he mentions at the end of his response), and if he gets any more like this one, it will all but kill my chances of ever getting to do one with him someday.
Bud deserves better!!

People like Chris Garcia are hampering others' chances for conducting an informative interview with Mr. Cort. No wonder why Bud is skeptical with interviews, as many of them do not ask "fresh" questions or do as much research as they should.
