Ask 'Speed Racer' Stars Emile Hirsch and Christina Ricci a Question
Filed under: Fandom, Interviews, Unscripted
Forty years after it ended its two-year run on TV, Speed Racer has grown up to be a movie, starring Emile Hirsch (as Speed) and Christina Ricci (as Speed's girlfriend Trixie), both of whose eyes are appropriately large and well-lashed. Filmed by the Wachowski brothers (err, siblings?) in their first directorial effort since the Matrix movies, Speed Racer looks to be one of those movies that people will either love or hate. When we debuted the trailer back in December, it seemed like half the comments included the word "awesome," while the other half included the letters (and symbol) "WTF?"
You'll be able to see for yourself on May 9 whether the Wachowskis have pulled off the trick of transferring anime -- and racetrack shenanigans -- to the big screen. Meantime, we have more pressing business at hand: Emile Hirsch and Christina Ricci have signed on for our Unscripted interview series, for which they'll be asking each other your questions. And they can only do that if you get off your butt and submit one, so do it in the comments section below.
Please post your comment by Friday, April 18, and include your name and the city where you live. Go, Speed Racer fan, go!

A question for Emile:
Emile... You were there, you saw them, they directed you. So, could you please explain Mrs. Patricia Chui and the rest of the world that the sex change operation of one of the Wachowsky brothers is a total lie? Could you help to reconfirm that truthe, which, by the way, can by found in New York Times, Reuters, CNN, BBC and the rest of the serious and MATURE information sources of this planet? Thank you, dude!

In portraying a character that originated in an animated form, did any difficulties arise in translating his/her stylized and often exaggerated personality to a live action format?

(For Emile)
Your past movie roles have been quite varied, from all different genres and different types of characters; do you choose roles like these so as not to get "typecast", or do you choose roles that just feel right to you?

Emile, you made an interesting choice by moving your lips in sync with the dialog, unlike the cartoon. Was this choice a dictated by the directors or the result of research?
In regard to the green screen work, do you find it more difficult to work this way as opposed to working in a set or on location?

Emile, fans are looking forward to seeing who you bring to the film's WP. We hope to see you bring a lady friend.
Also, are you going to star in SR II?
I hear The Wachowski's want to make a sequel to the film, "Speed Racer".
Any more "green screen" films in your future?
Did you sign on to do this film simply because you felt the pressure to appear in a BIG budget movie? A lot of your peers are ante'ing up to star in BIG budget films, such as Shia LeBoeuf. Any pressure to compete with him?
Thank you.

Question for Chiristina:
It's a question in two parts really. Firstly are there any similarities or differences between working with such visonary directors as the Wachowski Brothers and one that you've worked in the past, such as the likes of Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and Ang Lee? And since you've been acting for so long, do you yourself have any desire to get behind the camera and direct? (Either short or feature) As there was a rumour about you helming an adaptation of Speed Queen at one point.
I too agree with Johnny and want to add by saying you deserved an Oscar for Black Snake Moan, but also you should have gotten a lot more recognition for Monster, which I think was another underrated yet excellently played role from you.

- To Christina
Would you marry me?
It´s a real cuestion, but i know you have boyfriend...Then, here´s my question: If you had to choose one character of your big number of films, just one, which one would you choose, and why? - You can´t choose Trixie (promotion appart :P)
And another one pleaseee:
Will you come to Spain (finally!!) to promote Speed Racer??
PS: Of course you deserve an Oscar, but not just for Rae (Black Snake Moan) role. Selby (Monster), Elizabeth (Prozac Nation), Dede (The Opposite of sex), Wendy (The Ice storm) deserves too...
PS II: I love you, and your work.

For Christina:
I read that you once said, "I'm very shy. I can't even act that well when the camera's not on. I get really embarrassed."
Why is this? Why isn't it the other way around?
