Netflix Has Movies That Aren't Even On DVD! Like 'Rolling Thunder'!
Now this was a strange little discovery: If you're a Netflix member then you get to watch movies online So I thought it was a little bit weird that, as I was scanning through Netflix's latest online offerings, I noticed a flick called Rolling Thunder. Hmm, I vaguely recall that movie NEVER being released on DVD, so what gives? Well heck, it sure looks like Netflix has released some "instant watch only" titles that are simply not available on Region 1 DVD yet. (Just a reminder: Rolling Thunder is a 1977 action flick that's built up quite the cult following over the years. Apparently it's one of Tarantino's favorites too.) So there you go, movie freaks: If you belong to Netflix already, here's your chance to check out Rolling Thunder -- which I'll be doing later tonight. They're even using the old VHS cover, ha!
So while that was a juicy enough find, I thought to myself ... why not do a little more digging to see if Netflix has a few other "unreleased online exclusives." And I found some! Anyone out there dying to see Burt Reynolds in Malone (1987)? Tom Selleck in Daughters of Satan (1972)? The 1967 ensemble farce Eight on the Lam or the 1969 Jacqueline Bisset sex comedy The First Time? How about the 1959 exploitationer Diary of a High School Bride or Mario Bava's (now out-of-print) Planet of the Vampires? Also available on what I'm now calling the Netflix VHS Stack list: Michael Keaton in (the pretty terrible) The Squeeze (1987), The Glory Guys (a 1965 western written by Sam Peckinpah!), and the Oscar-nominated nympho-drama A Rage to Live (1965). Netflixers who want some of these flicks can start on this page and work backward.
Oooh, where to begin? (And if anyone from Netflix happens to read this, then A) thanks for digging up the rarities, and B) please let us know if there's a master list of these Netflix VHS Stack titles!)

I suspect they were tapped from sources already digitized for television distribution, quite similar to Comcast OnDemand offerings. You can find some kooky stuff OnDemand...
More surprising to me, however, was when Netflix sent me a bootleg region free disc of Audition nearly two years before it had its R1 release. I also got another unauthorized R1 disc from Netflix, though I can't remember what it was anymore [maybe Save the Green Planet?]...

Netflix also has all eight episodes of the mid-90's tv show, The Dana Carvey Show, that are yet to be available on DVD. The show features probably the earliest appearances on television of Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell

They also have Christopher Guest's "The Big Picture" for instant-watch only.

Thanks for the word. I think Netflix should and will eventually go to Instant Watch for most of its titles. I'm holding out for Green Slime -- and Special Bulletin.
