This just in off the AP: This summer's X-Files flick has finally been given a proper title. Wanna know what it is? Of course you do -- it shall be known as The X-Files: I Want to Believe. 20th Century Fox signed off on the title today, and that's what they're going with. Fans of the television series will recognize the slogan 'I Want to Believe' from a poster Mulder (David Duchovny) had hanging in his basement office where he and Scully (Gillian Anderson) worked.
On the title, director Chris Carter said, "It's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. `I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith." It's an appropriate title on many different levels; ever since the show went off the air, fans wanted to believe it would make a comeback on the big screen. And it did. The first film came and went, and since then fans have wanted to believe that Mulder and Scully would one day reunite -- either on the small or big screen. That day will finally come on July 25th, when The X-Files: I Want to Believe arrives in theaters.
What do you think of the new title? Speak ya mind folks -- speak it!

I love the title, except for the fact that in the trailer Mulder says the line, "Let's just say I want to believe." Which was a great line when I heard it, but now that it's the title of the movie I feel like he should then look into the camera and give a thumbs up and a wink. Anyone else hate it when the title of the movie is actually spoken?

You're missing the point. I'm talking about a moment like in the first LotR. When Agent Smith looks out over the group about to go off and destroy the ring and says, "You shall be known as The Fellowship of the Ring." It's off putting.

hahaha, i agree completely, Kyp. The Fellowship thing has always secretly bugged me. If it weren't for Pippen's quip right after ("so...where are we goin'...?) it would have been even more hokey...

Nope. I am not missing the point whatsoever. I just think you can't suspend disbelief whatsoever. You get your panties all in a bunch over some silly little thing.
By your logic no movie title should EVER be repeated in any form in the movie. Therefore I suggest we rename all movies to a generic title. So for this movie of course we would have to call it: "Ex-FBI agents searching for the answers of aliens in the universe and their existence on earth"

And the fact you call him "Agent Smith" instead of either his character in the movie you were quoting (Elrond) or the actor (Hugo Weaving) makes you lose all credibility.

It's been too long for this follow up. They should have done another film within a couple of years of the shows end. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up. Wasn't Mulder out of the FBI when the show ended? This movie would have a bigger box office if it had come out a few years ago.

Nice title. i really hope this movie is now like a throwback to everything that is X-Files, otherwise the poster tie-in will be in vain.

I'll confess that moments like that usually give me MST3K flashbacks ("Ladies and gentlemen, we have a title!"). Still, I like this title.

Fan? Not really. I gave up on the show after the first movie when the show began to drag on to long.
I would call my debate unnecessary. I just find your and Kyp's logic fairly ignorant.
And for the record, if Kyp's comment was posted on ANY movie discussion my point would be the same.

I think I would probably dig the title more if it were simply 'I Want To Believe.' Dropping 'The X-Files' from the title would be bad from a marketing stand point though..
