2008 New York Comic Con in Pictures
Filed under: Fandom, Exhibition, DIY/Filmmaking, Movie Marketing, ComicCon

You know that room Willy Wonka takes everyone in -- the one full of candy, and then the fat kid gets sucked into the chocolate pipe? For a geek, Comic Con is that room. Actually, Comic Con is like visiting 60 or 70 of those rooms for an entire weekend. I'm not even what you'd call a geek, gamer or fanboy, and I get absolutely overwhelmed each and every time I attend one of these conventions. It's seriously like losing yourself in another universe for awhile -- and then you get to watch a really sick trailer ... or three.
NY Comic Con blew the f*ck (pardon my French) up this year. Last year, they hosted Hostel II and The Hills Have Eyes 2. This year, they had Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Wanted, The Incredible Hulk, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Speed Racer, The Dark Knight, The Spirit, Prince Caspian ... and much more. Yup. In one year, NYCC has seriously kicked things up a notch and I was happy to be a part of the fun.
I'll do a whole recap thingy tomorrow (the scene they showed from Hulk brought the house down -- huge highlight for me), but in the meantime check out all these pics I took throughout the day. They're not all perfect, but they give you a pretty good idea of what it was like walking around, oblivious and in desperate need of some lunch. (Photos include: Hellboy panel, Spirit panel, Star Wars, Wanted panel, Iron Man video game, Hulk video game, hottie girls with guns, stormtroopers, and lots and lots of action figures.)

Ha, Frank dressed like The Spirit! Well...I guess he always does. So maybe it's safer to say they dressed the Spirit like him.

Don't take this personally, but as a general rule (because I've seen it happen many a time) it would help if the people sent out to these things could learn how to use a camera effectively.

Hey, I was gonna say the same thing. All of the pictures of figures are blurry, should have used the macro function, or held the camera still-er. Some of these look like they were taken with a camera phone.
I'm still enjoying them, it's just man, they are bad pictures.

Also, the stormtrooper thing. Will people not just let something go? I could think of nothing geekier and more out of touch than putting on a stormtrooper costume. It doesn't even garner a response anymore. Some people really have no lives.

I agree, like I said, some of them came out crappy. But they were the best of the bunch, and around some of these exhibits there were so many people fighting to get in, all I had was one shot and that was all. I didn't have time to come in and study the things, aiming for just the right photo -- just way too many people. Sorry about that; in San Diego we'll have much better stuff and better equipment.

erik, erik, erik.....those pictures are horrid, and your excuses have been dismissed....DSLR and a steady hand is all you need... not some crappy point and shoot... get with it.

What do you people want from me -- I'm a writer, not a photographer. (And the photos aren't all bad.) This was the best I could do with the equipment that I had, as well as the space and time I had to do this with. I'll be getting new stuff in a couple weeks, so the next CC will look a thousand times better.

You guys act like this is National Geographic or Time magazine. Both of which, incidentally, employ photographers who accompany the writer to help illustrate his story.
The criticism over picture quality is a little uncalled for.

I just know that digital cameras allow you to make a mistake, delete the picture, and try again. I was not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out the blurriness in hopes that any more pictures he takes end up being clearer.
Congratulations on going to the Comic Con though Erik. It looks like a lot of fun.

Great pics Erik...please tell me you took more pics of the girls in pic 47 (the bodog Ayre Force comic booth babes). The burnette Ayre Force model on the left was voted the hottest at comic con and I wish I could see more of her :(..
any possible way though you could send me the hi res version of pics 47?
thanks Erik!

Nice pictures from Comic Con! WIsh i could have been there more. Are there any more pictures of the Ayre Force booth babes (the last picture in your gallery)? I've been looking everywhere and I can't find any! I especially want to see more of the brown-haired Ayre Force girl on the left! She had the prettiest face and sexiest body I ever seen for a booth babe! (Not to mention a great toosh!)
