'The Spirit' Trailer Premieres!

It's here! The day Frank Miller is going to make or break it on his directing debut. Oh, I know it is only the trailer -- but we all know that enough bad buzz on a comic book property (especially one as beloved as The Spirit) could sink it long before its release date.
The trailer comes to us by way of MTV so unfortunately we can't embed it. I barely caught the damn thing before it flashed off the main page. It looks very very Sin City -- which has already caused no amount of criticism. But I can't deny that I think it looks pretty intriguing. Maybe it's just that oh-so-sexy tagline. The Untouchables music is a nice touch, too, but also jarring. It started making me think of that movie instead of the trailer.
So, nothing new really -- Miller may be getting a fanboy reprieve. I'm in your corner though, Miller. The Spirit comes to the theatres January 15th, 2009.
Thanks to our reader Electrix for sending us the YouTube link! Now no one has to spaz out clicking the MTV link, and our international users can get in on the fun.

That was really over-the-top. That was Sin City x3 if that is close to the finished product.
I'm not really complaining though.

Very cool! Thanks! I'll update it and credit you. :D I hate when trailers premiere on MTV, they're so difficult to catch with all their 20 second rotations...

A Jan release date? OHHHHHH that does not bode well for the film. That is the dumping ground for studio failures.

I don't think the release date means anything, really. It's an assumption we make now because studios got it in their heads that no one liked seeing good movies January-April. But 300 and Sin City were both released in the spring, and both did well -- Watchmen has a March release date too.
Both the Spirit and Watchmen had release dates before filming really began, so I don't think it's an indication of quality with either film. I think studios are just beginning to realize that not every single "cool" movie can (or should) come out in the summer.

The trailer didn't expose very much of the film. I know it's just more or less the teaser but it's hard to judge either way if the film looks good or not.
All you see is it has pretty much the same style as Sin City. What I'm more interested in is glimpses at the substance of the film and what Frank Miller brings uniquely in terms of style to the film. I don't know about others but I don't want a tit-for-tat rehash (as much as I enjoyed it!) of Sin City. I want to see an elevation/evolution in his style (fingers crossed).
I also felt a little cheated by the use of the classic score from the Untouchables (Ennio Morricone) but that's a small quibble.

His directing debut? He also directed a little flick called "Sin City".

Well, Rodriguez gave him the credit because he was such an influence on the film's look. But he never actually directed any of Sin City.

Trailers come out before music is written for the movie, so they use music previously written. That's why we so frequently hear "Carmina Burana" or music from The Natural ... things like that.

I'm not feeling it here. I know he was tight with Eisner but I don't think The Spirit had the same feel as Sin City. I'll wait for an actual trailer and better yet the actual movie to make a better determination.

I think this teaser is a joke, Frank Miller is just playing with us. The movie won't be anything like this.
