Megan Gale Abandoning 'Justice League Mortal'?
Filed under: RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Rumors have been swirling all week that Justice League: Mortal is dead (making the title so very ironic). Eric Kohn reported last week that Joel Silver was describing the film as "tabled." It sounds as if the final nails are being hammered into the coffin, as the Herald Sun reports that the stars have begun to jump ship. Reportedly, the entire cast has been let go, but as of now, the only name anyone is really talking about is Megan Gale, who was set to play Wonder Woman. An agent for Gale (and League costar Teresa Palmer) insist that both actresses are still on board and waiting for the start date to be announced. Industry insiders are claiming the film is off the books for good.
As there hasn't been one scrap of positive or definitive news on this movie in some time, I think it is safe to say the film is dead for the time being. I imagine it will resurrect in a year or two, probably with an entirely new cast and director, but I sincerely doubt George Miller's film will see the light of day. I feel bad for the guy, but it is obviously just not meant to be. He didn't respond to the Herald's inquiries, which may say volumes about whether he thinks the project is alive or not.
I think most Justice League fans will be sighing in relief if the film has met a merciful and early death. And if the film is still going, and it is only Gale who has left, it will be delayed that much further as they search for a replacement.
All I keep thinking is that Wonder Woman just can't catch a break. Who's the first name to flee the sinking ship? Wonder Woman! Then again, that might be in her favor -- and if Justice League: Mortal is dead, perhaps that will see her solo film rise that much sooner.

That's not even in the same department as irony. I've seen some misuses of the term "ironic" (okay, just about every use out there is incorrect), but this is the polar opposite of ironic.
It makes the title APT, not ironic.
Now, if it was called Justice Leage: Immortal, then you might have an argument for irony.

Frankly, I still see it as ironic since the Justice League wasn't intended to be mortal, even with the ridiculous moniker, but an ongoing and successful franchise of immortal characters. The surface meaning and the underlying one, etc.

Hmm, wouldn't the title have been ironic with the initial meaning of it (the underlying tone etc., by representing an immortal group of heros with the desired outcome being a succesful franchise) had the movie gone on as planned? But since the movie has now been proven to be "mortal" and is dead then the title is dead on its accuracy, therefore being the opposite of irony? I think I gotta agree with Astin on this one.

Especially since you wrote "making the title so very ironic" in your post. Thereby saying that the cancellation made the title ironic, which it didn't at all.
Plus, nobody in the Justice League is actually immortal. Except maybe Wonder Woman, but her level of invulnerability keeps changing.

I have a 3 and 5-year old who love the recent JL cartoons, and I must say there are some that are quite good. They ought to be mining those cartoon for some good plots, jokes, character arcs, etc. Hell, just hire some of the better writers from the cartoon series to write the thing.

It's a shame this movie died before we got a chance to see how bad it was going to be.

This can be nothing but good, I say.
Marvel's going about it the right way: Testing out the solo films first and slowly crossing them over. That's more fun as well as rewarding for fans.

I still believe that Megan Gale should portray Wonder Woman, if not in the JL film, then at least in the WW movie. She's just too good a choice to throw away now that the JL film is on hold…yet again. sigh… Lynda Carter should most definitely portray her mother, Hippolyta. And developing the characters and relationships on Paradise Island (i.e., the Queen, Artemis, Donna Troy, etc.,) and Greek mythology (i.e., Ares, Circe, Aphrodite, etc.,) along with the characters from Man's World (i.e., Steve Trevor, Etta Candy and the Woo-Woo Girls, the Cheetah, etc.,) would prove awesome for viewers! And provide her with her iconic accoutrements (i.e., tiara that she also uses as a boomerang and video phone; earrings that can translate any spoken language; bracelets that deflect objects and can create a force field around her) as well as her other magical super powers (i.e., mimic anyone's voice; the transformation twirl; and the ability to see the good in everyone). And let's not forget to include her invisible jet/Wonderdome cast of characters.
As for a No-No List, how about the following Don’ts as well:
1. Don't make her a teenager; make her 2000+ years old. It makes for a richer background and back-story.
2. Don't make her fly. She's not Superman. That's what her cool and unique invisible jet is for.
3. Don't take away her iconic costume. She wears the American flag and that's part of her unique appeal.
4. Don't make her overtly sexy/sexual.
5. Don't make her too mannish/butch. Allow her to have some curves, just not gratuitous jiggle.
6. Don't cast well-known actors other than Lynda Carter (for obvious reasons). Allow views the chance to get to know the character as the character and not some actor AS the character. Christopher Reeve and Lynda Carter are great examples of this!
7. Don't exclude villains from her comics. There are tons of great ones to use (e.g., Circe, Silver Swan, Cheetah, Dr. Poison, Ares, Dr. Psycho, etc.).
8. Don't forget to include her secret identity. The one thing that most EVERYONE who talks about WW comments on is that FAMOUS Lynda Carter twirl. There's lots of fun and excitement seeing how she'll be able to keep her secret in order to protect the ones she loves in Man's World as well as to be undercover.
9. Don't overlook the invisible jet/Wonderdome. Lots of creative possibilities and uniquely rich characters to draw upon.
10. Don't get rid of her high heels. They're silly in some ways, but she IS a comic book character, and if you look at most comic book characters, they're costumes really don't translate into the real world. But that's part of the fantasy and appeal. It's not supposed to be real world.
