Is it Time for 'Mission: Impossible 4'!?
Filed under: Action, Casting, Paramount, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Remakes and Sequels
The seas haven't been smooth for used-to-be-totally-loved shortie Tom Cruise. Lions for Lambs didn't help his career commercially, and Valkyrie continues to have problems, so of course, thoughts would turn to his popular fluff fare. There have been some rumors about Mission: Impossible 4, and according to Slashfilm, an insider has told Life & Style Magazine: "Tom will make M:I 4 once Paramount greenlights the script. There will most definitely be another Mission: Impossible!"This could be pure rumor just as much as fact, but I imagine it's true. There's only so long Cruise can stay relevant in the tabloids unless he gets back on track professionally, or jumps on some more couches. But I wonder if it could, or will, be a hit. Excitement has moved to other franchises, and while number three still brought in some cash, it's gross was under the money pulled in by the first two.
So, the question becomes: What could Paramount do to make this film relevant, other than re-starting the franchise with a new actor? Should this be a story about passing the torch? Is there a way to make people visit the film in bigger hordes? Should Tom Cruise give up, or is there a different franchise that might help his career?

I have nothing particularly against Cruse, I just wish that the MI movies had anything to do with the series. The MI TV show was all about a team and their meticulous planning and co-ordination, not one lone agent like Cruse's character in the movies.

The third MI movie had teamwork in spades, but very few people seem to have liked it.

Its the gossipers and ignorant people who need to stay away and move to Iran. He is an amazing actor and I can only think of a handful of films that I didnt like from him but the rest Im really entertained. His Oscar is long overdue. His personal life is his business. He can practice his own beliefs because we live in a free country same opportunities that is given to us Americans. Tom Cruise is a good man and good family man its the media and tabloids who are monsters. His many Hollywood friends and all the powerful players in the business didn't abandon him and that says a lot about his character.

Didn't Cruise leave Paramount to get involved with UA? I'm sure I remember reading at the time that it could make an M:I 4 starring Cruise an impossibility.

Movie sites get their info. from tabloids now? yikes. There goes the future of journalism downspiraling into a blackhole. Life and Style are trash not Newsweek,Variety or WallStreet. Word is out that Redstone and Cruise reunited as much as I love this franchise...I think JJ Abrams MI-3 is the best of the lot....no offense to the former directors. I rather see Cruise do something else. I thought he's doing something with Peter Berg about CIA Agent Salt from Columbia Pictures? According to CNN,Life and Style are among the many bankrupt trash papers and that means their lies will only get even nastier on all celebs.
People magazine and Vanity Fair are the reliable celebs magazines and more prestigious than rags like Star,US weekly,National Enquirer etc and biz is up 10% & 5% and stable for People and VF. A powerful people like Cruise are bound to have jealous freaks and some bullies in the media usually get more aggressive when their victims dont cower.
Cruise's comeback on Oprah..May 2... is already firing up the public and the media this Friday. Alert the tivos its May sweeps baby.
And part 2 May 5 on Oprah celebrating Tom's 25th Anniversary of Moviemaking.

Neil, I kind of agree you here, but I gotta say its not really his personal life that people give Cruise a bunch of crap for. I hate the paparazzi as much or more than most, and thats why I don't really see a need to get on the Lohan's and Hiltons out there. If someone wants to go out to a club and get hammered than thats their choice. But Cruise is consistently made fun of for his actions in mediums of his choosing. The Oprah appearance, his interviews about scientology and judgements of Brooke Shields were all things that he CHOSE to share with the world. He needs to be more careful about how he portrays himself, especially if he doesn't want the sort of public backlash he has recieved. Having said that, I do agree that my judgements of actors personal lives have nothing to do with whether or not I'll go see their movies. If they do make a MI-4 and it looks entertaining than I'll be first in line to see the movie...I'll just be sure not to try and attend the premiere :)

I think the decline of the MI franchise has more to do with audiences moving towards grittier movies like Bourne Identity and moving away from flashier "super spy" type movies. Even Bond reinvented itself with more than a healthy dose of jason bourne thrown into the mix.
As for cruise, I think he's doing the right thing. He's more or less stayed out of the limelight for a while and if he has a big hit or two in the near future, I think people will forgive him for his couch jumping, psychology dismissing antics.

Most victims of tabloid coverage aren't relevant. Hasn't stopped them before.

Im a Tom Cruise fan but its time to walk away from this franchise. Im really lost why news people dont make headlines of the flops of Pitt,Clooney and other male and female A listers but only target Cruise. They ignore morons like druggies and rehab kings and queens Robert Downey Jr,Heath Ledger,Dunst,Eva Mendes, adulterers, prostitutes, even idolize actors that assault this country for instance Sean Pean,Marion Cotillard,Susan Sarandon,Ed Norton,Maggie Gyllenhaal, even Depp making millions of money in the U.S. then flees to France to slam this country; he goes on to say his kids are better off raised in France than America and ordering wine from France during his Public Enemies shooting because Chicago wine are crap. So many wonderful talented conservative actors get the short end of the stick because Hollywood loves the liberal communist wackos. I guess I ought to boycott Garner because she loves Obama, boycott TDK because Eckhart is Mormon and Maggie is Anti American, boycott druggie Downey Jr.and Paltrow who calls Americans stupid and not cultured like Europe, boycott everything Disney for nudity controversials of Vanessa and Miley Cyrus.
But Tom Cruise is not allowed to practice his own religion.
So which religion is right and perfect for everyone to follow?
Mormom?Methodist?Hindu?Muslim?Evangelicals?Catholics?Kabbalah?Jewish?Orthodox?Jehovah's Witness?Christian Science?Atheist?

Im kinda in the middle. I dont mind MI-4 for closure sake but Im ok if they no longer pursue it. Its interesting though reading a bitter interview Joe Carnahan did for Wired magazine because he said his script and Africa setting is far superior than JJ Abrams. He also went on to say his cast of Scarlett Jo and if Carrie Anne Moss showed her gun sequences she really trained for pales to the chosen cast of Abrams. Paramount didn't greenlight Carnahan's vision and script.

Kevin- I will be sharing some precious intel.here because I know someone at WB,Dreamworks, Disney that knows Tom very well. CNN and MSNBC already know that Oprah's May 5 Tom Cruise episode will be Hollywood's A-list special on movies and big names. Its the crazies who are Scientology obsess not Tom Cruise. Who keeps bringing up Scientology and goes berseck when reporters dont bring up Scientology on interviews. Its the reporters who keeps stalking Katie and Tom about Scientology not them. Watch Matt Lauer show again and see that its his producers who brought up psychotropic meds on the show to boost the ratings. The media & tabloids puts their negative spins and are the ones overreacting.
They go crazy when Cruise goes into hiding and the tabloids comes up with the most ridiculous crap when they're having a low profile. Its the Anonymous group waging this war on Cruise about Scientology. The videos on Cruise church recruitment and B-day Cruise ship are all "stolen properties" by Anonymous. Those are private properties for the church and not for the public. Every church has recruitments and tranings for conversions.
Anonymous hacks the Church sites, cyberstalks the fans, hacks their sites and credit cards, steals fans identities, gave fake powder to the L.A. centers. They threaten Cruise life, fans of Cruise and many editors and reporters that support Cruise. ABC's Oprah Online team is prepared for the hackers of Anonymous group.
I pity this sick lost people but I cant wait for the LAPD and the FBI to catch them. For now the bad guys will win but in the end good always prevails and there's comeuppance to evildoers.

I'd go see MI IV. I think it's unfortunate that he's been portrayed as a goofball in the media but he's brought some of that on himself. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery if they were to attempt a number four they should all watch Casino Royale. If they can capture some of that action/emotional intensity they'll have themselves a winner.
