Karl Urban Is 'Relentless' in 3-D
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Casting, Deals
According to Variety, Karl Urban is set to star in Relentless, a 3-D action film that will be directed by Demian Lichtenstein.Relentless is the story of four extreme sports professionals who survive a plane crash in the Amazon jungle. They must use all of their survival instincts to outrun a tribe of homicidal natives, who are hunting them through the jungle. I am willing to bet the natives are also cannibals, because no one makes a jungle movie without cannibals.
The description leads me to envision this as a cross between Alive and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Only in 3-D.
Lichtenstein has been following James Cameron on Avatar, and was trained in 3-D filmmaking by DreamWorks' James Mainard and Phil McNally. "I am fascinated with the new 3-D technology and know that this script is a perfect match to take advantage of the unlimited potential of what 3-D can do. After being mentored by James Cameron on the set of his new 3-D film Avatar, I knew that 3-D movies are no longer just a fad. It is the future of filmmaking."
As I have yet to see a movie in this newfangled 3-D format -- I was ditched for that 3-D redo of Nightmare Before Christmas I don't know how many times, and I had no interest in Beowulf because I am a literary purist. Is it as amazing as the hype? Are we just seeing a fad, a ghost from the 1950's? So far, with Avatar being an exception (mostly because we know nothing about it), it just seems an excuse to make rather silly scripts. Nothing about the upcoming 3-D Journey to the Center of the Earth looks at all appealing, except for the 3-D elements. It all seems like something you line up for at Disneyland. But I confess, I am very behind on this whole trend, so I am genuinely interested to hear your thoughts about it.

I can understand your not wanting to see Beowulf, I had no interest in it at all until I heard I was showing in 3D in my local cinema. It really was unlike anything I've seen before, a really great trip to the cinema, the technology is really promising. From the get-go when the titles were all floating above the screen, casting shadows in the surface behind... and then there were things like the arrows that come at you (they made me flinch). Oh and for some reason the New Line cinema logo was really cool in 3D...
I too missed A Nightmare Before Christmas, though I saw the trailer which looked cool.
I'm fully supportive of this tech and I might see Journey just for the 3D. I think Avatar is going to be the film to blow 3D wide open. Combine 3D tech (I'm sure it'll be the best looking 3D film to date) with a good story and you've got a winner.
That's my humble musings on the matter anyway.

Too bad you missed "U2 3D" then! It is Live Action and man did it rock. Don't get caught up in the family amusement park ride "Journey 3D" - it certainly isn't the standard 3D fare that Hollywood is aiming for, but it has it good points.
Look for Thomas Jane's "The Dark Country", Neil Gaiman's "Coraline" and "Fly Me To The Moon" written by John Cleese and Disney's "Bolt" all due out this year.
Of course 2009 will be the turning point for 3d movies. Already the big 3 animation studios have committed totally to 3D (Pixar, Dreamworks and Disney) and all the major studios have 3D projects - in FACT I have over 50 3D movies listed on my constantly updated 3D movie list on MarketSaw.
So, yeah - 3D is here to stay - and sooner or later EVERYTHING will be in 3D and you will see the odd treatment being done in 2D - like Schindler's List used black and white. The world isn't flat anymore guys!! :-)

Oh, I forgot about U2-3D! I really wanted to see that, actually. It came at an awkward time when I had no money, and a few mentions of "Ooh, I hear that is cool" to family members didn't go anywhere. Alas!

Not a big U2 fan myself (I quite like them I just don't think I'm interested enough to see a concert movie) although it did look kind of cool. I've got too many summer blockbusters to see anyway apart from Journey, and if there are other 3D films coming out this year that's cool, I'll be able to get my 3D fix later..

Yes, because I was born in 1940.
I never said I wasn't embracing technology -- just not interested in seeing crappy films just because they were in 3-D.
If only manners were required before logging on the Internet ...

"As I have yet to see a movie in this newfangled 3-D format"
says it all really, until you've actually seen it, how can you possibly comment about it or slate it? Beowulf was utterly fantastic in 3D and really showed off the technology and give us a glimpse of what it will be like to watch movies in 5yrs time. Lets face it with ever increasing screen sizes, 7.1sound and a comfy sofa, what is there to drag us to the big screen?, personally i think this is the future of cinema and can't wait to see both great, good and crappy films in it.
My apologies if my rather tame insult pissed you off, and besides if manners were a requisite to logging onto the Internet sites like AICN would die and the Internet would be a very sad and unfunny place to be

Hence my opening it for discussion, yes? What part of that didn't you get?
I didn't judge the format, I asked whether it was all it was cracked up to be, or if it was just an excuse to sell tickets to crap films. I haven't heard one person who LIKED Beowulf outside of the 3-D experience.
Technology doesn't make or break a film for me -- and if it comes down to 2-D movies that are good, and 3-D movies that are crap, I will go with 2-D every time.
That doesn't mean I'm going to shun new technology, but I want it to be used in a movie worth seeing. And it sounds like there may be some coming up.

As a writer for a movie blog surely you should be at the forefront of cinema technology irregardless of your views of the actual film using it. Missing pretty much the first true 3D motion picture event just because your a literary purist would've earned you a slap on the wrists from me if i was your boss.
Technology will never make or break a film but it sure as shit makes a bad film tolerable.

Oh, so now we're going to get holier than thou -- a bit rich from someone who first came in here insulting like a 12 year old fanboy.
I wasn't writing for Cinematical in November. I was unemployed, and fresh off a long stint in the UK. Even if I had wanted to see Beowulf, I couldn't have afforded it.
Nothing makes a bad film tolerable for me. That's where you and I differ. I will see a good film in 3-D or 2-D, but life is too short to waste sitting through a bad one just because a dinosaur pops out of the screen. Real life is in 3-D, I don't need to pay for a ticket to sit in a 2 hour crapfest.

2) bongo...do you work for a 3D effects shop or something?? The writer requested constructive feedback, not mindless barbs.

3D is just the new "CGI"
When CGI first became really popular - we had a whole lot of crappy films just being made to utilize cgi...and a few random ones that actually used it to improve the viewing experience...
That's how this whole thing is going...
And this whole article is a helluva lot more exciting in 3D...
