VIDEO: Scarlett Johansson Sings 'Falling Down'
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Celebrities and Controversy
After her karaoke stint in Lost in Translation, it was surprising to hear that Scarlett Johansson was going to put out her own CD, "Anywhere I Lay My Head." Now it's heading for shelves on May 20, and the first video has been released on Yahoo, which you can check out above. Many of you are not all that thrilled with Johansson's acting, but what do you think of her singing?
It sounds like they toned down her voice and put a lot of effects on it to try to make her sound like Sinead O'Connor. I don't think it helps much. I have a lot of varied musical tastes, digging everything from John Frusciante's more avant-garde work, to the twang of Victoria Williams, to the melody of Lamb, but "Falling Down" just sounds bad. And it looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so. Variety has the clip up and included a poll that has, so far, 75% of the readers saying she should stick with acting.
What do you think? Do you like it? Is this another professional swing and a miss? No matter what complaints pop up about her acting, she's still moving full steam ahead, so will this be popular either way?

If the monotonic dirge is your thing, then this track will be right up your alley. I think it's interesting that she's chosen to make a Tom Waits cover album. Unfortunately I don't have the original "Falling Down" for comparison.
"Falling Down" is not a horrible track, but it's not particularly strong, either. If this is the strongest cut from the album, I have pretty low expectations.

It sounds alittle bland in my opinion. I think the effects they added to her voice where to mask that while seeming artsy.

Actors are creative people, and they shouldn't be restricted to just one form of expression. Let them spread their creative wings!
I think it's tragic when actors are criticized for experimenting with music, writing, painting or whatever simply because we're more used to them as actors. If we didn't know about their "day job", we'd be more open to their projects, judging them on merit, not prejudice.

It sounds like she's depressed and talking. Maybe her voice coach should have worked with her more to get the Scarlett out of her voice. Or maybe she should try a higher pitch. But Christina she's not...even close.

Much as I love Dave Sitek from TV On The Radio, I think the song's a bit 'overproduced.' Not too much range from Johansson either. I'm quite lukewarm at this point, although I have to admit that the 'Fannin' Street' cover is kind of nice.
Also, the Salman Rushdie cameo in that video - eh?

I think it is ok. I am interested in hearing more from the album. I do have to say that I prefer her version after listening to both. I have always found Waits to be difficult to listen too. I enjoy L. Cohen, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa so I can an do enjoy vocals that are not mainstream but it sounds like he has cancer or something in his throat.

THANK YOU! I kept asking myself she reminds me of another artist and indeedly its Sinead O'Connor.
Its not really bad but it does not stand out either or makes her vocally appealling. I will regret saying this but Paris Hilton sounds better than her.

Everything about this project has seemed amateurish to me. This song is horribly produced, the video looks like it cost $12 to make (not that there's anything wrong with that -- http://www.worldonfire.ca/), and have you seen the album cover? It looks like a 12 year old with a bootleg copy of Photoshop made it in 5 minutes.
Scarlett can sing better than this. And Tom Waits definitely deserves better treatment.

Scarlett Johansson is a very pretty woman but I had to tear my ears off and throw my laptop out the window when "Falling Down" started to play.
