Remarkable New 'Hancock' Trailer is Online
Filed under: Sony, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Trailers and Clips

Oh, this is going to be huge. There's a new 3-minute trailer for Will Smith's Hancock available here and ... well, go see for yourself. I recommend the Quicktime version.
I know the all-too-common criticism that "all the good parts are in the trailer" makes this less meaningful, but: Every frame of that thing is gold. The first minute or so, with Will Smith as a sarcastic, rude, drunken superhero, is simply brilliant; I've watched the five-second exchange between Hancock and the indignant bystander ("I can smell that liquor on your breath!" "'Cause I been drinkin'!") a half-dozen times now and giggled every time. Smith deserves an Oscar just for his delivery of that line, and we don't even get to hear the whole thing (I'm guessing the next word is "b*tch"). The second half of the trailer, giving us a glimpse of Hancock's attempted PR comeback with the help of an opportunistic publicist (Jason Bateman) isn't as incredible, but I love the focus on what it's like to be a superhero not in a universe where you can do whatever you want, but in the American bureaucratic state. Hancock's canned press conference apology is priceless.
The special effects look seamless, and I'm particularly curious to see a full-on summer blockbuster done in director Peter Berg's signature volatile shaky-cam style. From what I can tell, it's a bit toned down but still unmistakably present; look at the SUV scene in the opening seconds, and the introduction of Jason Bateman about a minute in.
This looks like a summer movie made by a bunch of very smart, very talented people. And that's something to look forward to.

This movie looks horrible and I can't believe this is the 4th of July film. This has the chance of flopping almost as big as The Incredible Hulk

Sorry, but I could not disagree with you more. I originally thought this film looked bad after watching the first trailer. Now, I think this is going to be one of the biggest money makers this summer behind Iron Man. I could be wrong but I definitely think that this will be big. There is NOTHING else coming out that weekend and Hancock will be HUGE.

This movie looked great to me from the first few images I saw. I guess I'm seeing things that other people aren't. Oh well, maybe that means I'll have the whole theater to myself on July 4th. Private showing FTW! =)

The premise is rather like "The Incredibles". Which was a really funny film. Maybe a lot of it has to do with the fact that is live action, but it comes off kind of cheesey.

The Incredibles is an entirely different concept. The superhero was legislated out of existence in The Incredibles. The heroes were forced to work normal jobs.
This concept is that the world has a superman type but he behaves in a manner that's far more interesting than 99% of the superhero movies. It's more of a "what-if-superman-weren't-a-pansy-boyscout-wiener?" proposition.

I hadn't heard of this movie until last week. Somehow I'd missed it.
I've bashed Will Smith movies repeatedly here, saying he has awful choices in scripts (but is always excellent.)
This movie looks like a winner. I'll wait for reviews, but it might be the first Will Smith movie to get me in theaters since ID4 wasted two hours of my life by insulting my intelligence to the point that I wanted to punch every castmember in the face.

I have to say the first couple of clips and trailers made me go blah. But after watching this, I am definitely interested now.
Isn't it kind of amazing what a movie trailer does when it shares with you a little bit of the story rather then go look at these effects, look at this explosion, look at Will throw a whale.

What I like best about the concept (so far) is summed up in the exchange that Hancock has with the policewoman. This looks like a fantastic movie all of a sudden, as if I wouldn't pay to see Jason Bateman in freakin' anything. That guy has made me laugh since we were both kids, him starring in It's Your Move and me enjoying it.
