A Spooky New Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Happening'
Filed under: Horror, Thrillers, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips
Despite having one of the worst reputations in Hollywood, it would appear that things are starting to look up for M. Night Shyamalan. You can check out the latest trailer Shyamalan's The Happening above, and it already has me sold on the apocalyptic thriller. Even though I was relatively impressed with the first trailer, this one has definitely amped up the creep factor (caused some serious heebie-jeebies when I saw it in front of Iron Man last weekend).
Mark Wahlberg stars as a meek and mild high school science teacher who lands smack dab in the middle of an end of days scenario. And might I add that it will be nice to see Wahlberg play something other than his usual tough guy role -- I mean, it's been too long since he's really had to act. Zooey Deschanel co-stars as his estranged wife and the criminally underused John Leguizamo, Spencer Breslin (brother to Abigail) and Ashlyn Sanchez play fellow survivors.
The Happening is scheduled for release on Friday June 13th, which will put the thriller in direct competition with The Incredible Hulk for opening weekend supremacy. Between the critics who call Shyamalan a one-trick pony, and the bad buzz for the big green guy, it's going to be a tough call for audiences. I know which film I'm going to see first -- how about you?

They should call this The Nothinging, because there's NOTHING!
My friend remarked that maybe the cause behind this is something as trivial as bees or maybe some special breed of fireant that comes every thousand years.

He has a bad reputation but you got to give it to the guys he has got imagination and goes in direction most people wouldn't. He just needs to pull it off better and stop with the twists. I would be cool to never know what is happening just that it is.

When doesn't he play meek and mild? That's EVERY Wahlberg role since Boogie Nights. He's got the range of a broken squirt gun. and the screen presence of a lamp post.

Wasn't this a Radiohead video already? The typical M. Night Shyamalan unexpected ending crap, no thanks.

Tick, Wahlberg was hardly meek in The Corruptor, The Departed and Four Brothers. Even was pretty good in Shooter and Three Kings.

Same character in every film - slow, same monotone, same vacant stare.

To each his own Tick, I just don't see it. If you just don't like the guy that's one thing, but I still hardly see him as the same slow character in every movie.

His character in The Departed cussed often but was otherwise the same Marky Mark we get in every movie. The guy has no range. When he plays adults it always feels like a kid trying to play star (for exampled, The Departed, Shooter, Italian Job, Four Brothers, 3 Kings). He always comes across like a whiny teenager...every damn film.

Tick... the Departed? I think you need to watch that one again.
Anyway, I thought Signs was the killer bee's knees. Unbreakable wasn't bad either, at least the genesis of a superhero thing was an original idea.
This new one looks a bit too much like Signs to me. I'll probably see it though, what the hell.

"one of the worst reputations in hollywood"... that's a HUUUUGE overstatement. the only places he's badly taked about are Internet blogs. There's a vocal minority online who will bash everything he does no matter how good it is.
Among the general public his work is highly anticipated and his name draws crowds like Spielberg and Tarantino.
people need to stop perpetuating this lie that people don't like shyamalan movies. The guy is one of the most successful directors of the last 10 years. His movies average a gross box-office that rivals any other director working today.
If you want a great trailer for this movie, check out the international trailer. It's really eirie. Also, the tv spot that's out now is pretty good too.

I agree. Some people just don't feel right unless they are putting other people down. I love M. Nights movies. I love the unexpected twist and turns, keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'd rather see an M. Night movie than a Sex in The City,( no surprises there). Give me M. Night any day, can't wait tell this one comes out.

i guess i just don't understand the hate for Shyamalan. I just looked his IMDB pade up again. I've never seen the first two movies, but there was a twist in 6th Sense and Unbreakable (which i loved). Signs didn't have a twist did it? The water wasn't a twist, he even had a character (that he played) say they didn't like water. Village i guess had a twist, but i wasn't really a fan of that movie. LitW was pretty straight forward... I think people just need to lay off assuming how his movies are going to end. No one bitches about Michael Bay having tons of F/X and the good guy winning at the end.

I can't wait until we find out that "The Happening" is actually a 12 year old girl with some poison soap bubbles at the end of the movie.

I'm excited about this film... Wahlberg has been great in the last few roles I've seen him in and I think he will pull this one off well.
YouTube has a good re-enactment of one of the scene, performed in Sydney last week. Check it out:
