Discuss: Will 'Sex and the City' Quietly Become Summer's Biggest Hit?

I had a very strange weekend, especially since I'm so used to hanging around here, listening to all you folks rant and rave about Batman, Iron Man and Indiana Jones. The weekend was strange in that everyone I spoke to offline named Sex and the City as the film they're most looking forward to this summer. Yes, Sex and the City: The Movie! Apparently, Oprah also did a show where she let her entire audience watch SATC: The Movie, but turned it off with 20 minutes left. (I don't know about you, but if Oprah pulled that "you can't watch the ending" sh*t on me, I'd switch it over to Rachael Ray full time!)
So then I sashayed my way over to Moviefone's Summer Movies poll, which asked readers to decide on a summer film they were anticipating the most. Know what won? Yup, Sex and the City. Crazy, right? I knew this TV show had a massive fanbase, but I, personally, hadn't heard a peep out of anyone who was actually looking forward to the movie. Is it that your usual SATC fanbase doesn't hang out online, perusing through movie news sites? Maybe they're out shopping or, ya know, living actual lives ... instead of geeking out over a new Dark Knight image on Cinematical? (By all means, continue to geek out -- I'm just trying to make sense of this whole SATC thing.)
Fox's Richard Friedman filed his non-spoilerish review of SATC, which starts out with "Here's the bottom line: It's going to be a very, very big hit. I saw it on Saturday night at a private screening. Women wept, cheered. It's the Neiman Marcus catalog on steroids." Har! Har har! ANYway, I already know how most of you feel about this film -- but what about those around you? Are they freaking out? Is anyone freaking out? Is it all in my head? Does Sex and the City really have the potential to quietly go down as the summer's biggest hit?

Stuffing the ballot box, maybe? I was one of the biggest fans of the show possible but am not planning on seeing it. At least, in the theater :)

It seems that Sex and the City would have a rather gigantic fanbase with the middle age women as the foundation, but Sex and the City has the same problem as Speed Racer, there are people who think it looks great and people who think it looks terrible, there is very little middle ground. So SATC could very well go down as this summer's biggest blockbuster especially since it is now showed on TBS for those who don't have HBO, but I think that SATC has a big reputation to live up to, and a lot of great movies to beat out. I don't personally know many people looking forward to this, and I'm not going to see it myself. It will definitely take a lot more advertising and hype for a movie like SATC to beat out Goliaths like Iron Man or Indiana Jones, but maybe it has a few stones up its sleeve.

Well, I'm one woman who wouldn't go near it with a ten-foot pole, but I don't know about other women.

There already *was* closure, that's the thing that irritates me most about all of this.

With the likes of Indiana Jones, Batman, Iron Man, Speed Racer, Wall-E etc to contend with...I don't think so.

I seriously doubt this will be summer's biggest hit. I'm sure it will fair rather well on the box office, dare I say it will be on the top three of the weekend, but becoming the biggest hit of this summer? When you have movies like Indy 4, Iron Man, Speed Racer, Hancock? Heck even Mummy 4. Plus, I don't think their fanbase is that big, and I don't think all women will go crazy for it, I know I'm not.

"Snakes on a Plane" had a lot of buzz, too, and it bombed at the box office.

A hit, but summer's biggest? Absolutely not. Look at the audiences for the biggest hits of (any) summer past -- families (definitely not) and men age 18-34. SATC draws neither.

Erik, I saw the same poll on moviefone and wasn't surprised at all that SatC had the most votes. If you think about it it makes perfect sense. What were the other options? Probably Iron Man, TDK, and Indiana Jones. Well all of those movies have a heavy overlap in terms of viewers. So while I may be MOST excited about the TDK that doesn't mean that I'm not also definitely going to see the other two movies (I actually already checked out Iron Man...awesome!). SatC doesn't have that sort of overlap, so while the same people were all splitting their votes up among the other three films SatC picked up the demographic thats not quite as interested in the standard summer blockbuster. The online world is probably somewhat similar. However, when the actual box office reciepts come in there is no chance that SatC makes more than any of the other highly anticipated films of the summer. I'm sure it will do VERY well, but I don't see this movie climbing into the list of top moneymakers of all time, whereas some of the other offerings this summer have that potential.

I think this will be the counterprogramming hit of the summer. The fanbase is massive, nowadays you have both all the folks who watched it onair, and the many (younger) women who have come to adore it since on DVD, etc. I know several women who cannot wait. Every time I see another new clipreel of shots from the TV series that have been put together to remind us all of the show, I am reminded again of all the reasons I loved SATC back in the day. And those reasons are timeless, and cross most age barriers among women. Also crucial here, is your point that the net readers on film sites like this very one are certainly not their main audicence. If you go to a site like Jezebel, or the newly posted NY Magazine interview with SJP, and see comments there...you will get a taste of the meatspace buzz amongst the ladies. But even that probably doesn't cover it, since as you say, many SATC fans are out "living actual lives"... ;)

Robin, there are rumors of two additional Sex and the City movies. If you don't support this movie in the theater, they may not be made. If you're really a fan, show it. Get over any uncomfortableness at going alone, because you won't be. ... And wear something nice like the SATC women would do on their night out. It doesn't have to be expensive, new, or uncomfortable. SJP set the standard for us "real" women by recently walking down a red carpet in a $9 dress. I LOVE her for that!! http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/05/02/2008-05-02_sarah_jessica_parker_hits_the_red_carpet.html

I loved the show when it was on HBO, was really sad to see it end! I am looking forward to seeing the movie and I know a lot of my friends feel the same way. I hope it does make a big splash at the box office!
