Monday Morning Poll: Will 'Iron Man's' Awesome Weekend Help 'The Incredible Hulk'?
Filed under: Action, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Monday Morning Poll

In case you haven't heard by now, Iron Man took home a whopping $201 million worldwide over the weekend, with that amount pretty much split right down the middle between domestic and international. Not only is it the second best non-sequel opening ever, but it also proved that Marvel (now self-financing their films) is in it to win it ... big time. Fortunately, folks won't have to wait long to see if Marvel will strike gold twice -- in a little over a month from now (on June 13, to be exact), The Incredible Hulk will debut in theaters. Last time a Hulk film was in theaters, Ang Lee directed and Marvel did not self-finance the flick. After seeing what Iron Man did to the box office over the weekend (and what fans thought of the film), something tells me we're in for a completely different kind of re-boot this time around.
Right from the start, folks haven't been giving The Incredible Hulk a fair shake, myself included. It took a long time to get those first images, and even longer for a trailer. But now that the film's marketing campaign is in full swing, I'm starting to see the fans turn. I witnessed the full "field scene" from the trailer at New York Comic Con last month, and I can assure you it looked awesome. Everyone is talking up the Iron Man cast, but have you noticed that The Incredible Hulk cast is just as good (not to mention I think Tim Roth will play a better villain than Jeff Bridges)? And now that Iron Man killed, does that change anything for The Incredible Hulk? Do more people now want to see it? Are expectations higher? Sound off below in the poll and in the comments section ...

Dude, I meant killed at the box office, not, like, killed a person.

Not digging those choices. How about "I loved Iron Man but don't give a crap about the Hulk" :)

Iron Man had the right combination of (1) awesome trailers, (2) spectacular reviews, and (3) an interesting cast.
Right now, Incredible Hulk has the intriguing cast, but the trailers have been lackluster (well, just not as good as Iron Man's). However, I think good critical reviews can save it and push it over the top.

Iron man and Hulk are unrelated. Don't think anyone really cares about the Hulk. It was just out 3 years ago and the general feeling is "who cares?"
A dumb green monster is tough to connect to.

Not unrelated; take a look at the IMDB entry for Downey Jr.; he's appearing as Tony Stark in THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Tie that in to the bonus post-credits scene with Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, and the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. thing, and I believe they're gearing up for something bigger.
As soon as I saw the HULK tie-in, I saw the Hulkbuster armor in my head. I am a nerd.

downey appearing in Hulk means nothing. As does the silly shield/nicky fury crap. Nobody is going to drop cash to see Downey in a five second clip during Hulk. I love Downey as an actor and he's the only reason I tolerated Iron Man.

When I was in the theater on saturday people seemed pretty impressed with the Hulk trailer especially when Tim Roth got kicked square in the chest.
i'd be somewhat surprised if it didn't have at least a good weekend take. I will say I don't think it'll do as good as Iron Man.

It won't do Iron Man numbers, or Indy or Dark Knight or Wall-E numbers either, but Hulk should do well for itself. For all the guff that Ang Lee's take on Hulk gets, people seem to forget that it still made a profit in the theaters and made who knows how much money on DVD. And that's for a movie that wasn't exactly theater-friendly for the popcorn-munching masses. All in all I don't think it matters much. Marvel isn't about to give up on the green guy just yet. Unless this one completely tanks at the box office, which it won't.

The fact that the first Marvel movie to come out after the putrid Spiderman 3 and did well, should be enough to have restored faith in the Incredible Hulk.
Now if they could just move up the announced schedule by 1 year and slate IM2 and Thor for 2009 and Cap. America and Avengers for 2010

I was looking forward to it - until I saw the VFX. Rhythm and Hues really dropped the ball. Hulk looks like crap. I don't think great actors can save this one.

As long as they actually start marketing the damn thing, they should be fine enough.

That was an astoundingly well written post. Do they give the Pulitzer for blogging? They should. This man would would win it for 2008 and 2009. It's that good. Nay, it's like a god - not The God - showered his golden juice of talent upon the poster and in return we have been given written-manna.
No matter what they, here's a talent beyond reproach. I sit in awe, marveling at what I've been blessed to have read.

Thanks, I try. Or maybe you were being sarcastic? Nah. You weren't being sarcastic. Maybe you were being an asshole, instead? Nah, isn't possible. But thanks, I always try to write award-winning posts about The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man when I have the time. Perhaps you'd like to step up to the plate as well?

Erik, I think you missed post #14, which I'm sure is the focus of YouFaceTheTick's rapturous reply. The glory that is revealed in 3 and a fraction sentences of run-on erudition is rare and to be cherished.
Re: your poll, I've already spoken to people who haven't seen Iron Man yet, just heard good reviews. Word of mouth alone about Iron Man has them expecting Hulk to be better than they thought it might. That said, yes, I expect quite a few people will want to see Hulk who weren't that convinced before this weekend.

thankz kvice juss got some guud newz about the hulk.they are starting to promote it but not on tv until special effect is good enough.u can expect the hulk to do his thing like the power punch, thunder clap,he talks says things like HULK SMASH.now they are some speculation that how the hulk pants stays on well heres how he grows into it but its impposible to put on a pair of jeans like that if he is hulk sized
its juss like a baloon u put ur hand inside it and expand ur fingers put if ur finger is expand its nearly impossible to put it on it will juss tear.now most people say the hulk looks like a video game thats bcuz hes not fully renderd juss like the iron man superbowl spot when he blows up the tank.my prediction for this film is big put i cant pick a number for it yet.this is gona be popular with yung kids and people who watched the 70's show of it and its gonna attract teenagers to watch the 26 min fight scene whichs gona be entertaining to audience dont get me wrong but think if the 2003 version was nvr made how hyped up this would be the only thing standing in this film way is the 03 version which wasnt bad it was the storyline and the comic bookstyle they used which bored n confused ppl....
