Fan Rant: Disney Actually Made a Movie Called 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua'
Filed under: Comedy, Disney, Fandom, Family Films, Fan Rant
OK, first off: Whoever decided to call this movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua needs to be fired really quick. I mean, seriously: Are we still cribbing titles off of Beverly Hills Cop -- which came out 27 years ago? You want your new kiddie flick to be remembered as fondly as Beverly Hills Ninja, Beverly Hills Bodysnatchers, Troop Beverly Hills, and The Taking of Beverly Hills? With all due respect to Down and Out in Beverly Hills and Slums of Beverly Hills, the phrase is practically the kiss of death where movies are concerned. (Makes me wish Axel Foley's first adventure had had a more accurate title, like A Detroit Cop in Beverly Hills or The Cop Who Laughed Funny.)But somehow I doubt it's the title that's going to irritate you most about this trailer. Personally I couldn't get past the fact that the computer-generated canines look about as realistic as a bunch of Muppet puppies. And get this: I actually own a half-chihuahua / half-terrier (it's actually my sister's freaky little dog), so I guess I'm part of the intended audience for this thing. Anyway, check out the mind-numbing promo clip and then we'll talk blame.
I just knew it was a Raja Gosnell flick. Who else but the director of Big Momma's House, Yours, Mine & Ours and both Scooby-Doo movies could helm something called Beverly Hills Chihuahua? (OK, fine, the guys who directed Snow Dogs or Kangaroo Jack could have handled it too.) Assuming you have children who actually care about such things, I offer this plot synopsis from the IMDb: "While on vacation in Mexico, Chloe, a ritzy Beverly Hills chihuahua, finds herself lost and in need of assistance in order to get back home."
Drew Barrymore provides the lead voice. Other familiar pipes include those of Jamie Lee Curtis, Salma Hayek, Edward James Olmos, Andy Garcia, George Lopez, Cheech Marin, and Paul Rodriguez. (What? No Banderas?) And while I do think it's cool that they've hired several actors of Hispanic and Latino descent to provide the voices for a bunch of chihuahuas ... dear lord this movie looks to be an endless migraine composed of forced cuteness and bad effects. Plus I'm not the first person who'll call it a feature-length Taco Bell commercial. The flick arrives on September 26, which gives you parents approximately three months to cook up some unimpeachable reasons as to why "We're NOT getting a chihuahua!" (Ah, plus the movie poster tells you how to pronounce "chihuahua," because Disney is convinced that most of us are morons.)

Being Mexican myself, it takes a lot to piss me off when it comes to pastiche stereotypes but this is such a turd, seriously. I love how he names Aztecs right when you are seeing Machu Picchu in Peru. Imagine a movie from Disney that directly mocks black people like this, Beverly Hills N ga...of course not, we are tamed.
This movie coming from a society that still thinks 5 de Mayo is big in Mexico.

Man, we can rant all we want. But sadly, bile like this will forever be churned out, and the person who came up with the name, will do it again and again. They will climb that corporate ladder coming up with ridiculous film such as this.
And when I was in line for Iron Man I honestly, upon seeing the poster for this movie, which happened to be in the MAIN lobby, I did think it was a Taco Bell movie.

The first title the film had, "South of the Border", was way better then "Beverly Hills Chihuahua". It sounds like a title to a Disney Channel Original Movie.
When I first saw the trailer, for a second (literally) I though it'd be funny. But then came the dancing, the singing and the million and one chihuahuas, at the ruined the whole thing. Another part of the trailer that annoyed me alot, was the fact that they say the word Chiuhuahua almost 100 times!
Hint to Disney: I kinda got the point that the movie has Chihuahuas

I'm Mexican and I hate chihuahuas because they're so overrated! >_<
I'm afraid to see the trailer. Judging from the cast list, that is a waste of talent, or they're just in the movie for the money.
As for the Machu Picchu thing Mr. R mentioned, wow. Disney's offices are in LA, LA is in Southern California, SoCal is near Mexico, the movie takes place in Mexico, and you'd think the filmmakers had some knowledge of Mexican culture.

Ok guys heres the deal, This movie looks adorable! In a world with such bad (for lack of a better word) things going on I welcome "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." The pups are wonderful, the song is wonderful and the theme is great. In case you all can't figure it out, its about helping one another. people who complain about a cute, fun, good heartened and kind movie have way to much grief in their life. Good job Disney and the Chihuahua's creators for such a cute and kind movie. If the movie is even a fraction of the trailer I commend you already. Kids and adults alike will love it. It brings kindness back to movies.

I hate it when Hollywood or Disney puts these type of movies out because everyone will want one of these dogs just like the Dalmations but many end up in the shelters and put to sleep. Because not everyone can own one of these dogs. I own two. All this movie is going to do is make chiuahua's be in higher demand and make these horrible people who breed for a living in these horrible puppy mills more money. Many will be given to kids and kids do not need to own these dogs. Makes me sick of what the end will be for the demand of these dogs after this movie hits the theaters.

Uhhh....Steve
If you think the title "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" is a rip off of "Beverly Hills Cop" then you are old...apparently old and very very grumpy from reading your comments. And all you other crybabies...it's just a movie...it's about chihuahuas...it's a fictional chihuahua move... it is not based on an actual event...don't see it if it's insulting to you...stay home and think about how you've been wronged and how you hate everything...do a collage about everything you hate and then take it to the mall and show others...jeeze people.

I guess the title "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" would cause a person to think of "Beverly Hills Cop"....if that person just awoke from a 20 year coma. For the rest of us the title conjures the many mages of chihuahuas and other dogs of the toy variety we've seen carted around in Louis Viton or Burberry handbags...wearing clothes designed by the likes of Vera Wang. This movie may not become a Disney classic but it will certainly be enjoyed by children and those of us who adore our chihuahuas.

What is wrong with you people who are making awful comments? I think the movie is going to be darling as is the trailer. I laugh every time I watch it. I adore my chihuahua and she is what kept me going when I lost my husband at a very young age. I will definitely see the movie.

To those who bash this movie, you guys are lame and have no lives, the movie hasnt even been released yet! To me i think like it looks like a cute, typical disney movie. I am not a chihuahua fanatic but i do have a chi and he is the best dog i ever had. And if you think this movie was made to insult the hispanic race, get over yourselves. I'm sure racism wasnt in any part related to this. And just for your ignorance Chihuahuas DID orignally come from Mexico and there have been ancient carvings found in temples that resemble chihuahuas. You people need to stop being such crybabies and just enjoy a nice lighthearted movie.

This is for all the defensive "how can you say anything bad about disney" freaks out there:
I saw the preview for BHC before Wall-E this weekend. It looks mind numbingly awful. This isn't because I am cynical, or miserable or any of the ad hominem attacks you want to throw out. It looks horrible because of the computer animated dogs rapping and saying stereotypical 'mexican' things.
I loved Wall-E, and saw many other previews for light hearted kids movies like Madascar 2. I have no desire to see that movie, but it doesn't look as annoying, stupid or offensive as BHC.
Disney's quality has gone down the toilet for a while. Lion King is the last great movie they made, and they have managed to make sequels that ruin every other great story. One more thing, those Taco Bell commercials annoyed the hell out of me, and the thought of a 90 minute movie filled with talking mexican dogs makes me want to blow my brains out.

ditto on everything, Philismybuddy. We too are newer to the chi world, and frankly, our dog is awesome. So sweet and fun and friendly, not at all the stereotypical 'scaredy cat/ yippy / barky' misconception. I also happen to be hispanic, and I don't find the film offensive whatsoever -- in fact, to the contrary, it seems to portray the dogs in a very regal, both ancient and modern, sort of way.We saw the previews today with our girls, and we are all excited to see this CUTE, LIGHTHEARTED film. So many of you need to lighten up.

I know I am going to love this move. Why? Because it is no sex scenes in it. I am so tried of sex movies. I would rather watch cute movies like this.
Remember! If you have to see a movie with sex in it, than you must be a lousy sex partner..
I hope there is a sound track to this movie. I am a latin, so I say "VIVA LOS CHIHUAHUAS!!!!"
