Rumor Central: 'Captain America,' 'Iron Man 2' and 'Batman 3'
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Ever since Marvel announced release dates for a slew of new comic book-related films yesterday, the internets have come alive with scoopers. We were a bit burned on the last rumor Cinema Blend reported, so take all three of these with a huge grain of salt. Captain America: According to CB, Matthew McConaughey is the first name to hit the possible cast list. The film, now titled The First Avenger: Captain America, has been given a release date of May 6, 2011, and so I wouldn't expect a name to sign on for awhile. That's not to say there isn't a wish list floating around -- and, if one did exist, I imagine McConaughey's name would be on it, along with several others. I'm sure fans already hate the idea of seeing Mr. Rom Com himself show up as their beloved Captain America, but I actually think it's a good choice -- an interesting choice -- and one I'd definitely support. With the right script, he'd bring the looks, the muscle and the charisma. (Actually, I could kinda see him playing Thor, too.)
Iron Man 2: Yes, work will begin on this monster right away as a release date of April 30, 2010 is already in place, giving Jon Favreau and his team two years to get what will soon become the world's most highly-anticipated sequel in the can. But what will it be about? Well, CB claims that one of the plot lines being considered involves Sam Jackson returning as Nick Fury in order to team up with Stark to go after a terrorist called The Mandarin (featured prominently in the comic books as one of Iron Man's greatest villains). They also claim Marvel may throw a Thor cameo into the sequel to further tie The Avengers thing together, and also because Thor will debut his own film a couple of months later on July 4, 2010.
And the Bats???
Batman 3 (aka the one after The Dark Knight): This is the shakiest of all rumors, because it's sort of obvious already -- but here goes: CB claims the next Batman flick will not include the Joker in any way; his character has been written out of the script. Furthermore, it will be a direct continuation of The Dark Knight and feature Two Face as the main villain. Not only that, but there's a chance Robin will show up too. And that the third film will reference the graphic novels The Long Halloween and Dark Victory.
So there ya go. Which rumors would you like to be true, and which would you rather disappear altogether?

Captain America:
Will they call him Captain America or will he be called Captain "World for Everyone" Kind of like what they did with G.I. Joe...A series formally based on America and Americans, and now the movie is going to be a Multi-cultured, Multi-National Cumquat.
Just a thought...
But, Batman Shall Rocketh as long as Nolan is at the Helm...I really dont care what happens in the third installment because I know it will be great.

Brad Pitt should be Cap. Thor should be called The Mighty Thor and star Kevin McKidd. No Robin - ever.

Why no Robin? O yeah thats right cause in the 50s comic book super heroes were accused of being overly sexualised and GAY thereby corrupting all the chain smoking teenagers!!

The First Avenger: Captain America is a stupid title. Here's a free, friendly hint for Marvel Stuidos, drop the 'The First Avenger' part and there's your title. Viola! I know, Hollywood, these things *are* rocket science.
As for Batman, I cannot see Nolan involving Robin in any way. To do so, in my opinion, is a big mistake.

Bale mentioned those two Batman stories in an interview after the release of "Begins". I don't think he has too much say in the storyline of the films, however maybe DC was pushing to use those stories from the beginning.
"UGO: Were those Frank Miller books you mentioned like Year One and Dark Knight Returns a big inspiration for you?
CHRISTIAN: Very much, yeah. Those, and the artwork, like I said of Alex Ross. I really loved that. There's one called War, I think it was. DC sent me a box full of graphic novels, which I had in the trailer all the time with me. But the two that I liked particularly were Dark Victory and The Long Halloween. They just had some really fantastic imagery in there of the severity of Batman and everything and I would kind of imitate those positions. "

If I can't get Frank Millers "The Dark Knight Returns" I'll gladly take Tim Sales "The Long Halloween". Good way to showcase a lot of bad guys with a nice twist at the end.
For Captain America, the guy has got to be big, not a girly-man like Brandon Routh. Same with Thor.
I could see Kevin McKidd as Cap, with a 2 year workout and some HGH. I wouldn't be able to get past McConnaughy's accent or smarminess. Plus he can't act.
For Thor, I would like to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from New Amsterdam. Having Nordic roots sure doesn't hurt.

First off, look at the past: Downey Jr., Edward Norton -- so you have to imagine they will not settle for anything less than a huge name (or at least one that's very recognizable) to star as Captain and Thor. AND, they're going to want to sign someone for at least three films, so look at actors who could use this sort of bump at this point in their careers. And McConaughey is certainly one of those actors.

But look at the gems McConaughey has made recently, such memorable films as "Fools Gold." That's a real winner there.
Seriously, a movie like Captain America is going to come down to the match of director and leading man, which I can't think of any good combinations for. The only possible person I can see being the Cap is actually Matt Damon, which I think would be awesome.
Thor? That's going to be a tricky one. Zakk Wylde? Lol.
For Batman, I have no doubt that that's the storyline they'll follow in the third film, but I wouldn't mind another villain entering the world. Robin, on the other hand, is the worst thing to ever happen to Batman. Yes, even worse than Joel Schumacher.

Thor should use wrestler TRiple H, he has the right build and look.
Captain America should be just Captain America and star either Paul Walker or Ben Affleck(yep i just saidd that and they could do this role as well as Downey did Iron Man).
Batman 3 must be made and I think no Robin is good but perhaps a little thing like Grayson family circus coming to town soon.
Am I the only one still wanting a Green Lantern movie?

Downey could be Dr. Strange!
Mad Hatter/Jervis Tetch would be a perfect secondary villain in the third sequel to The Dark Knight.
Black Mask, Killer Croc, and Mad Hatter would be perfect choices, though. I'd take either of the three.

If Matthew McConaughey became Cap I might have to boycott any movie with him in that role. He doesn't look the part and I doubt if he can act the part. Captain America requires someone who can balance all-American charm and a righteous anger and grim determination. I don't think McConaughey has it in him. Get an unknown, at least get someone who doesn't come with so much baggage.

I want the idea, image, possibility and chance of Robin ever appearing in a Batman movie again, it brings back bad memories of ice skating, it would ruin the respect that Nolan gave back to the character. Ugh, Robin.

Batman: "A Death in The Family" would be a good movie. And a Nightwing movie wouldn't be awful either.

Egads! Not McConaughey! Too scrawny and then Texan drawl for a scrawny Brooklyn kid who gets injected with a Super Soldier serum? Nah....
How bout: Channing Tatum (or Paul Walker) as Cap & Kevin McKidd as Thor in a cameo in "Iron Man 2"
As for "Batman 3", having only Two-Face be the villian would be great. You could introduce Dick Grayson in there considering the past he has with Two-Face. It could be interesting, depending on how Nolan handles Grayson. I've trusted him thus far though.

How about a movie with Batman, Jason Todd (as Red Hood), and Black Mask. That'd be an awesome movie.

I agree with the fact that Cap needs to be big and also that it needs to be really well done, should deal with WW2 and go ahead and shoot me- should star George Clooney. Also it should be called Captain America and have director Steven Speilberg attached.
Thor will be good with someone like Karl Urban and I hope they go the route of mythology more than superhero. Matt Vaughn rocks.
Bat man 3 could rock if they don't let Robin be a hero yet, but just a maladjusted boy that reminds Bruce of himself. You can't extricate Robin from history.

The Mandarin is totally set up in the first Iron Man movie. The name of the terrorist sect that kidnaps Stark is something like "The Brotherhood of the Ten Rings" or "Ten Fingers", and the leader has a huge ring that he turns inward at one point, to hide the stone against his palm. After seeing that, I was very careful to observe that he was distinctly NOT killed in the course of the movie.

Sorry. That big space was supposed to have a "Minor Spoiler" warning in front of it, but I made the system think it was a bad HTML tag.

I loved Captain America comics as a kid. But I'm pretty worried how he translates to real life-his costume is pretty...gaudy.
And the various attempts throughout the years have been atrocious (one had him wearing a motorcycle helmet, ffs).
But you can't really go the Xmen route with him. Damn, Iron Man had it easy :p
