Discuss: Could Brad Pitt Really Play Thor?
Filed under: Action, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek

When Marvel officially announced the release date for Thor last week (June 4, 2010), news quickly followed that Matthew Vaughn was no longer directing, a script was being fine-tuned and Marvel was in search of an actor to fill Thor's mighty shoes. Seeing as he's blonde, a very popular actor and has starred in films like Troy, the first name to pop into the minds of fanboys (and girls) everywhere was Brad Pitt. And whaddya know: Latino Review is saying this week that Pitt is at the top of Marvel's wishlist. Who woulda thunk it?
On paper, this does seem like a logical -- and realistic -- choice. Pitt is at a similar point in his career as Robert Downey Jr., Edward Norton and even Johnny Depp (who surprised fans by starring in three Pirates of the Caribbean films for Disney). If there ever was a right time for Pitt to take a leap and "do one for his kids," Thor would be that project -- especially since his gal Angelina has already starred in two Tomb Raider flicks. But then the guy would have to sign for at least three films (most likely), not to mention the fact that he'd need to be in phenomenal shape. Plus, perhaps Troy was Pitt's Thor, and maybe he's tired of all those giant blockbusters; maybe he'd rather do some smaller stuff.
However, then you look around Hollywood and, honestly, who else could play the Marvel superhero? Taking into consideration the move by Marvel to hire bigger names for their films, is there anyone else who could muscle-up and play Thor? Or is Pitt the only name that could truly bring this project to the next level?

I'm sure Pitt could do a fine job of it, but Thor should be a whole lot bulkier. Not just more muscular than Brad, but a much larger FRAME. We don't get many good actors in that shape and size, so I'm not sure who to suggest. OK, Karl Urban. That's my best shot.

Vincent D'Onofrio needs to be Thor!
I jest, but it would be funny.
I think Brad Pitt would be pretty decent. He did bulk up pretty good in Troy and really, Thor while bigger HUGE would be cool, I think you could get away with a small but really buff version.

People always say Pitt for Thor, and truth be told he's third on my list, My first choice is Kevin McKidd, who has been mentioned and I can easily see being Thor, My second choice is kind of odd but I believe is a good choice but Clive Owen, He would look kind of odd as a blonde, but he's that good that I wouldn't mind, And Third is Pitt who has already played a a Thor 'type" in Troy and could definitely see as the marvel superhero, I would want any of these three, Camera work would have to be good to make these three look taller than Norton, Downey Jr. and who they get to play Captain America.

although i can't think of any current actors who fit the bill, thor seems like he should be played by someone like either dolf lundgren or vladimir kulich (lead viking in 13th warrior) in their prime.

Not to dish Brad Pitt, because he is a good actor, but this sounds just as wrong as Matthew McConaug"hey-hey!" as Captain America. Plus, shouldn't Thor be way tougher looking?

Brad is cool and all, but no way does he have the proper frame for Thor. Kevin McKidd is your best choice. Hands down.

I don't mind the idea of Pitt - but McKidd would be another great choice. And D'onofrio definitely deserves a cameo, for being the first big screen Thor.

Triple H from the WWE has the right body and shape but not the acting quality for a character of Thor. Thor is more god like and HHH jokes around too much in his roles. Look at Blade Trinity when he played a vampire. Pitt would be a good choice but as everyone else says they need a bigger guy, not bulkier. Aaron Eckhart aka Harvey Dent from Dark Knight would be a good choice.

Why is everyone obsessed with having these overgrown bad actors play these roles.I remember reading on of these message boards how people thought Brandon Routh is was too small to be superman, give me a f*!@$%# break. I personally think Brad Pitt would be a good choice(in His Troy physique of course),too many people look at the comics and take the over exaggerated muscles and physiques as how the should look when transformed into live action which is complete bull. As a devoted comic book fan, a artist and person with a very muscular physique myself I dont need whom ever they cast to be huge just let them have abilty to bring the character to life with their acting skill and the gym can take care of the rest.

"For the kids?"
I sincerely hope that the filmmakers don't go into this movie with that kind of mindset. Doing live action superheroes is ridiculous enough, and it takes really good out of the box thinking filmmakers to make them good and credible. To do this for the kids we'd have another Speed Race in our hands rather than another Batman Begins.
To go for huge hulking muscular actors to fill this role goes along with the "for the kids" mindset. That's why I think someone like Brad Pitt would fit the bill perfectly.

I think the best casting would be - are you ready? Peter Horton, once the star of "30-Something". He's about the same age as Pitt - but he has a rugged, nordic look that would be far better suited to the role than Pitt. He's a much better "brooder" than Pitt. I think Pitt should be cast too, but rather than playing the lead, he should be Heimdal, the hornblower.

I'm thinking Aaron Eckhart. Big frame, square jaw. He could beef up and be great for the role. Same height as Pitt, bigger physique. He also avoid the "Hey! That's Brad Pitt!" syndrome.
He's done Two-Face, why not a good guy?
The more I compare pics, the more I like it.

Aaron Eckhart for the win! We were just watching Neverwas and came to the same conclusion. His features and acting would carry the movie and, yes, the gym can take care of the rest.
that said, Brad would do a fine job. But I like the idea of taking a different route with Aaron.

Or, if you don't care about acting ability - HHH from the WWE. Definitely has the build and look. Even has some charisma, and wrestler -> comic book hero isn't that much of a stretch. Of course, the thought of him "acting" is frightening.

Thor is great in comics because of the over the top powers and dramedy but really, a movie with Brad? Please spare me, the guy did Seven, can you sink lower after that masterpiece? Seriously, we are running out of characters and as cool as Thor may seem to some, the truth is they didn't do this movie before Batman or Superman because the character is not half as cool as they are. Running out of choices for sure
