First Photo from 'The Road'!

I'm about 50 pages away from finishing The Road, and all I think about when I'm reading it (apart from praying the two stumble across another can of peaches -- just one more can of peaches, please!) is what director John Hillcoat is going to do with this sucker. It has the potential to be absolutely amazing, from a visual standpoint, and should make for an interesting comparison to Hillcoat's last film, The Proposition -- which, like The Road, was full of empty land and empty people. Needless to say, I cannot friggin' wait for this film to arrive in the fall.Which brings us to this first image from The Road, courtesy of Row Three. The photo shows Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the father and son who attempt to head south across a post-apocalyptic United States, toward the coast. Along the way, they'll hide from cannibals, search for more food, clothing -- anything to keep them alive, really. The film, which is due out November 26, is based on the book by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) and also stars Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron.

One of the best books I've ever read. Can't wait, but they need to incorporate the man's thoughts, too, those were key to the story.

I agree about the thoughts, but wouldn't it be awesome to see his thoughts reflected in his tone, mannerisms, actions and body language. If Mortenssen can convey that then he will be an oscar worthy actor. I especially thought that the moments when he contimplated suicide intense and sorrowful. When reading the novel it was bleakly horrifying the sense of lonliness and slow leaching of the mans humanity while trying to give the boy his sense of humanity.
The shot seems a bit bright, hopefully it will be a bit grimmier like I pictured it, as well as the characters.

Frankly this is the only way this type of writing should be brought to life on screen, and a good actor can do it. Say what you will about the adaptation of The Hours, but I think the leads in that film did a damn fine job of bringing so much of the nonverbal aspects of Cunningham's book to life. I think Viggo's certainly up for that kind of challenge with The Road. I suppose a lot depends on how the script was written.

Will this movie also point to global warming "events" in the future, even though the book is not about climate change at all, but some other kind of end-time event, probably a nuke attack or a comet hitting Earth or a volcano blowing huge. But question is: will viewers see in this film a warning, a wake up call, about global warming, too? What do you think?
