'Supermax' Villains Revealed?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Remember Supermax, David S.Goyer's Green Arrow movie? If you've forgotten, don't beat yourself up -- I think it has vanished off the radar for most people in the last year, simply because there are too many superheroes to keep track of.Goyer plans to break the superhero mold with his Green Arrow movie -- rather than the same old origin story, he intends to send the green-clad hero to prison after being framed for a crime. Stripped of his identity, he must team up with the supervillains he helped put away in order to regain his freedom. The Shawshank Redemption with superpowers! (Here's our original story if you want to read all the fine points.)
According to Latino Review, who read a copy of the script, the movie will be chock full of lesser DC Comics villains: Merlyn the archer, the Tattooed Man, the Aryan Nation (comprised of Iron Cross, Heatmonger and Backlash), Japanese assassin Shock Trauma, female shape-shifter Gemini, Icicle ... and a bunch more (get the full list over at LR).
But possibly, more intriguing than all the obscure characters is the possibility that Joker, Riddler and Lex Luthor are all inmates of the Supermax prison. All three appear in the script, but at this point are only cameos. I can't imagine all of these villains are going to appear on one screen, do you? And would that be the equivalent of superhero overdose?
There are loads of script details over at Latino if you're interested. As expected with a script review, it can be rather spoiler filled, so I will refrain from posting much here. There's really no in between with this storyline. It will either be the most fun a DC character has ever had at the movies, or it will be beyond awful. But considering Goyer was behind Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, we have to give him benefit of the doubt. Right?

I think it's kind of an interesting idea, actually. At least it's different. On the cameos: horrible idea. MAYBE Riddler as he's not currently being used in the other features. A Ledger-less Joker (unless they wait 5 years or so to make this) making a cameo is a beyond-bad idea.

Not so. Make it real easy. Dub in Ledgers laugh and have a body double in a cell and show him only from the back. Joker cameo done.

yeah because that wouldn't be cheesy or in poor taste AT ALL...
Just leave Joker out of it, please.

Fae it Moo, The Joker is an iconic DC villain. While it is unfortunate that Ledger is dead, if the character does not die in TDK (and Supermax is set in the same "universe") then there is no problem with recasting. My simple fix was an easy way to give honor to Ledger and not take away from his performance.

And Amanda Waller is in it as a warden. She's awesome! That alone has me interested. Don't nobody get past THE WALL!

Nice. I would love to see CCH Pounder reprise the role as she did in the JL cartoon. She nailed Waller perfectly imo (even if physically she doesn't)

Also.. would it be too much to ask to see this film as an origin for a Suicide Squad series? Waller could easily see GL break out and come up with the idea to use captured villans on missions.

I wouldn't be against a Joker cameo for Ledger's sake, but the fact that he be in this Jail rather than Arkham Asylum IS weirdly weird. Betcha they use the modern day Calculator "guy who trades information" rather than the old one "Living calculator guy". Also, agreed on the CH Pounder thing.

I do agree that he should be in Arkham.
Perhaps if Supermax is supposed to exist in the same universe as BB and TDK, then maybe Arkham hasn't been rebuilt yet after the end of BB?

Who says ledger joker is the real joker?
I mean look at the batman beyond movie joker.
It's simple enough to write in mind control and batman is pure fantasy to begin with.

To be frank, at this point most any villain would be OK. They could always do with Joker what Birds of Prey did and let a stunt man play Joker and Mark Hamill do the voice. (I'm sorry but he is an AWESOME Joker. Creepy as hell, just like he should be)
Really and truly I just want Justin Harley to play Green Arrow. He does it so well...
