No 'Back to the Future 4', Says Writer-Producer

Talking with a friend after watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, we agreed it was time to retire some of these old classic franchises once and for all. Personally, I could live with a new Indy, a new Die Hard, a new Rambo and a new Rocky -- but once you touch my beloved Back to the Future franchise, well, we've got problems. Thankfully, according to BTTF co-writer-producer Bob Gale, a fourth installment in the series will not be happening anytime soon. BTTF.com reports back from a special screening/cast reunion last month in which Gale squashed sequel rumors right from the get-go: "Let me answer one question before anyone asks it, which is, 'Is there ever be a Back to the Future Part IV?'", Gale began, before answering, "No."He continued, "Well now, wait a minute now. We've all seen sometimes where they make one too many sequels and you say, 'Maybe they shouldn't have done that.' I'm not going to name any names of movies, but you know what they are! But more importantly, as I'm sure you all know, Michael J. Fox is not in the best of shape with his Parkinson's. The idea of making another Back to the Future movie without Michael J. Fox - you know, that's like saying 'I'm going to cook you a steak dinner and I'm going to hold the beef.' You can't do that."
Amen to that! Fans, of course, moaned and groaned when Gale said there wouldn't be a sequel -- but if you're really a hardcore fan of this series, how could you want one? Seriously now ... let it go.

This is great to hear. The Back to the Future trilogy is by far my favourite series of all time and to undermine it by creating a fourth would be awful in every way. The trilogy is perfectly self-contained and thats really part of the reason it works so well. I could actually go for a 5th or even 6th Indy/Mutt movie. I loved the new one and don't see anything wrong with more. But those films are totally stand-alone. BTTF is one complete trilogy and should never be touched.

Yeah, I totally agree! It's good to see someone with some sense and for these people who were moaning and groaning with Bob made that announcement, so what! Those are exactly the kinds of people that shouldn't be making decisions anyways, they're just fans and are the same kinds of people who follow all the HYPE, but don't understand what really makes films like these successful.

Ironically enough I had that one too many feeling right in the middle of BTTF Part 2. 3 was a big saving grace but in general it did little to advance the overall mythology. The first movie was a true scifi classic. They should have left it at one...

The first film isn't really much of a sci-fi classic really. It's more of a comedy classic. But in the end its a classic classic. The sequels don't come near the perfection of the first film, but I always found they added quite a bit to it.

I am a huge, in fact one of the number one fans of back to the future but i would welcome a return, but realize of course that Michael J. Fox would not be able to take part. It just saddens me that when great movies are talked about, back to the future does not seem to make it on many (it does some) of the lists and that is one of the reasons why I would welcome a return. I feel as a fan we of all trilogy's have been jipped in that we never got the action figures, the toys, the books available, etc that other trilogies have managed. The great thing with Indiana Jones coming back after 19 years, is that kids who have seen this will want to revisit the original three == what reason do kids nowadays have to see one of the greatest films ever made -- back to the future -- if they don't even rerelease it or make it available to blu ray etc.

Everyone seems to have forgotten how lame BTTF3 was. At the time there was a distinct feeling that they had jumped the shark with it. Now nostalgia is getting in the way again, i look forward to some misty-eyed posts about Honey We Blew Up The Kid etc.

I want the next Back to the Future part 4. Please please, don't rule him out of the 4th part of Back to the Future part 4, I want Michael J fox to star in the 4th part. As they said they will not do Bttf4. What they need to do is wait for Michael J Fox to recover and he should be in good shape.
We want a Back to the future part 4 and more more bttf movies in the future.
We want more Hoverboard chese and running around but not Michael J Fox with those. He said that I don't want to do the Skiteboard and running aorund scense, he said that I already been there and done that with part1,2,3. It's not only that he is getting to old that and he only 47 years old. He is right of what he is saying. It's better to get the younger cast to do that.

Michael J, Fox has Parkinson's and it can't be cured. He can be treated for it but it can't be cured. He is in no shape to do a sequel or sequels. I would like sequels too but I know it can't happen. The only way a sequel could possibly happen is have the cast comeback and let Doc's kids travel through time. Or let Marty and Jennider have kids and let them travel through time. But it wouldn't be the same if that happens. Now, the train from BTTF 3 was cool. That was pure cool and would love to see it in the sequels but I know it won't happen. End the stuff on the sequels.

All of the comments I have read are not a good excuse to not make a Back to the Future 4. This does sound self centered, but not meaning to be that way. I understand the Michael J. Fox is very sick; I have seen all of his movies not just Back to the Future. However, like other sequels, sometimes and usually the main character gets killed off in the first 15 minutes, and someone takes over -either villain or hero. They could even show the scenes of what Michael J Fox is actually going through, similiar to Christopher Reeves in Smallville ( he had a small part at the end where he talked about his tragedy). I think it would be honorable for Michael J. Fox to complete Back to the Future 4. I do have some ideas for all three to be in 4.
Sincerely,
Rob
