Is Brett Ratner Taking on 'God of War'?

When it comes down to it, Brett Ratner might not be the most hated man in the movie business -- but he's definitely in the top five. In a profile for Ad Age, the director sat down to talk about Brett Ratner Brands, his new consultancy business. But things get interesting right at the end of the article when the journalist dropped the bomb that Ratner might be working on a big-screen version of the best-selling video game, God of War.For those of you who haven't played it (and I really recommend you do), here is a quick primer: God of War centers on Kratos, a celebrated soldier who is haunted by his past transgressions and his debt to the Gods of Olympus. It could have just been your typical hack and slash game, but the cinematic approach and highly entertaining story line earned it a reputation as one of the best around.
Talk of a feature film surfaced back in 2005, and Universal was the studio named to produce. According to recent reports, the script has already been finished and casting has begun to heat up (some recent buzz has Djimon Hounsou in consideration for the lead). But then fans the world over had to deal with the unpleasant news that Uwe Boll was being considered to direct -- luckily, this never came to be. So I guess Ratner could be considered a step in the right direction. Then again, if you had the misfortune of seeing Rush Hour 3, you would probably disagree.

This is just getting out of hand. I do not like Brett Ratner, but comparing him to Uwe Boll is ridiculous. In spite of the fact that he's the pompous asshole who dicked up X-Men 3, Ratner has an obvious competency behind the camera and treats filmmaking like a real job. Uwe Boll just doesn't give a fuck. That's like comparing a kid who busts his ass to be a C student to one who flunks out because he doesn't try.

Who is Ratner sleeping with at Sony Pictures, first they give him xmen3 now this (lets hope this is all talk). Wow I can't wait for pg13 version of god of war, let me guess kratos gets a side kick for ocmic relief and the story is simplified to the point that even the dumb asses who enjoy rush hour can understand it - f***ing horay. If he really is directing what a waste of a great and film worthy game franchise. Maybe after this becomes a blockbuster but terrible film he can finally get the halo movie back on track.

Universal has the rights to the film adaptation for God of War -- not Sony Pictures. Also, Fox -- not Sony -- produced the XMen franchise. In related news: There's hope for the MGS movie, if you've been keeping track. (And that one IS produced by Sony.)

Just to make a point about the game's quality: if you search the ranking of the best "movies" made in 2007 in IMDB, God of War will appear in first place (or at least it did last time I checked)!!!! Remember that IMDB also lists TV shows and Video Games.

Seriously, God of War would, in the proper hands, make a hell of a fun movie. It'd be like 300's darker, bloodier older brother. But those hands do not, and never will belong to Brett Ratner. He is just absolutely wrong for a project like this. He's got the wrong sensibility for this kind of film. He has, to date directed just one R-rated movie: Red Dragon. And someone who can take that level of acting talent, and still deliver a wholly underwhelming film that I barely remember watching is not the kind of director who should helm God of War. It needs a strong stylist with some vision, not a borderline-competent hack like Ratner.

i really, really don't think this is a good idea, as a huge geek about those two games...but...if they do make it, djimon hounsou is perfect for kratos. i really hope that's not just fanboy rumors.

Uh...not the Rat...please. I like Hansou, but I'd re-team Gerard Butler and Zack Snyder.
