'Bloody Valentine' Remake Gets a Villain: TV's Kerr Smith
Filed under: Horror, Casting, Deals, Lionsgate Films, Remakes and Sequels
Horror fans are savvy enough to know that when a remake casts stars of teen-skewing TV shows in the leads, that can mean only one thing: the dreaded PG-13. The Hollywood Reporter says that television veteran Kerr Smith has joined the cast of My Bloody Valentine 3-D. He'll be playing Axle Palmer, and THR describes him as married to Sarah (Jaime King) and the nemesis of Tom (Jensen Ackles), which sounds villainous.
Smith was effectively creepy as a real jerk in Final Destination and I assume he'll bring some of that edgy attitude to his role as a nemesis, but he's better known for his roles on Dawson's Creek and Charmed.
Likewise, Ackles is currently starring in Supernatural and is also a veteran of Smallville and -- surprise! -- Dawson's Creek. King has a decent string of movie roles as well as TV appearances and will be in Frank Miller's upcoming The Spirit. But I suspect that the casting of the young-looking Smith and Ackles means they're trying to appeal to the teen crowd.
I thought the original My Bloody Valentine was pretty weak, but it definitely has its fans; check the reaction to Scott Weinberg's post when Patrick Lussier was named as director, or Stacie Ponder's spirited defense at Final Girl. We'll have to wait until January 23, 2009, to see how bloody this Valentine turns out.

kerr smith is a great actor -- he was phenomenal in the short lived Fox series JUSTICE and i just wish that he had as great a role as he did in that show.

Good to hear, Jake; I missed seeing 'Justice' entirely.
My concern isn't so much with the actors themselves and their relative abilities as it is with how the movie is being positioned. Perhaps as the release date draws closer, we'll hear more about the filmmakers' approach to this particular remake.

I have a couple of issues with this article.
1.) In what way is Supernatural a teen-skewing show? A lot of the other shows mentioned in this article definitely are, but Supernatural isn't. To judge a show based on the network it is on seems really closed-minded to me, and the author's dismissal of Ackles as some pretty boy they stuck in this movie to appeal to the teen crowd makes me doubt he's ever bothered to watch the show. The stars of Supernatural are not teenagers, nor do they play teenagers on the show. This show is actually really smart and scarier than 99.9% of the horror movies that the studios have cranked out in recent memory.
2.) Isn't it a good thing to be young looking in Hollywood? Would everyone feel better about this movie if the stars were old and ugly? I strongly disagree with the implication that a star can't be both attractive and talented.
3.) I think it is utter snobbery to judge an actor because they appeared on a certain show. I'm sorry, but there is no nicer word for it. At least Jensen Ackles, Kerr Smith, and Jamie King are all working actors and not out making utter fools of themselves like all of these people we see on all those stupid gossip shows. When is the last time any of those people actually did anything? Entertainment news shows used to be, wierdly, about the entertainment. Now we are lucky if they talk about one show or movie for five minutes before tackling the subject of who got drunk and ran somebody over this week. I do not consider that entertainment.
By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I am 23.
