'Beverly Hills Cop 4' Will Be For Kids
Filed under: Action, Classics, Comedy, Paramount
... And you thought the announcement of Beverly Hills Cop IV meant Eddie Murphy was returning to his old potty mouth days. Well, think again, movie fans. The director who ruined the X-Men franchise and the studio that nearly ruined the Indiana Jones franchise is about to ruin the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Unless the third one already did that (I actually skipped it, so I'm unsure). Brett Ratner, who is signed on to helm the return of Axel Foley (Murphy), told MTV Movies Blog the following bit of sacrilege: "10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don't really know the old 'Beverly Hills Cop.' So it's an opportunity to make it new for kids. The same way it felt for me watching 'Beverly Hills Cop' when I was a kid, that's what I want to do for kids today."Except that when you were a kid, Brett, a movie like Beverly Hills Cop could be made and marketed for all ages despite its R rating. Plus you were 15 when the original came out. Not 10 or 12. Me, I was 7, and I saw it in the theater. And I saw the second one, also R-rated, in the theater at the age of 10. So, I understand that it's fine to let the wee ones see them. But, realistically, you can't make another R-rated BHC and publicly say it's for kids nor can you make a PG or PG-13 BHC and expect it to be anything like it was for you.
When is Hollywood going to get it that they can't keep ruining R-rated franchises with PG-13 installments? Already we've seen it happen with Live Free or Die Hard, AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and reportedly the upcoming Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Actually, as FilmChat pointed out a year ago, it's been going on since even before the BHC series began (Amityville 3-D, Conan the Destroyer). OK, Ratner, I guess what you're doing is only natural, after all.

Its all a matter of box office receipts-as long as they can make more money on PG movies in theatres, they will continue to make PG movies for theatres. Then they release the "unrated" version on DVD for you, which you will buy, (i.e. the Die Hard movie..with swearing!) continuing the cycle :p

Exactly. It's hypocrisy. For one thing, kids probably won't see Part IV without having already seen the first three R-rated films. Then, for studios to release an unrated DVD they're stating that the ratings are useless and insignificant. So why not just make an R-rated movie in the first place?

Just a few days ago, I was so HAPPY to hear that a beverly hills cop 4 would finally be in the works. But now it's gonna be pg-13? COME ON! We need the foul mouthed Axel Foley and not the family guy nutty professor and that is what excited me about the news. Eddie should be doing more 48 hours and less daddy day care. I hope that this is not true.
any word about judge reinhold?

You'd think that if Axle Foley was stil working at the BHPD he'd be running the Department, and not still just be a Detective. He'd be the authority. Unless he's totally incompetant. I don't believe that's been the case in the past films.

Well I for one am fine with a PG-13 rating if it is like what Fox did with Live free or Die Hard. The movie was felt like a Die Hard movie then when it comes out DVD give people the unrated version too.
But at the same time I so hate Brett and I so will hate him more if Beverly Hills cop turns out bad. I do think you could make a great Beverly Hills cop movie that is PG-13 just as long as you push the rating as far as you can that is were Brett will fail. So I wish this movie would not get made. Plus I see all the time kids real young in R movies and they are fine so why not make this movie R too.
I just hope Robocop does not get remade and become
PG-13 too.
Though at the same time I so think a new BHC movie could be great but Ratner making this film makes this movie a pass for me. Like I said you could make a really good 13 movie if you push it to the limits but Ratner sucks at what ever He touched and so don't think this will be a great movie.

You can't really blame Paramount for almost ruining Indy, since (as with most other Lucas-involved productions) it was financed largely independently and only released through a big studio.

beverly hills cop was just some action flick from the 80's it was hardly groundbreaking.. or maybe that was just me but whats with all the Ratner digs? i don't get this bullshit about him ruining X3, i thought it had some seriously cool as hell set pieces, Xavier dying was pure class and as an Xmen film it was pretty damn good, i've watched it several times and each time can't for the life of me see how vastly more terrible it is than the first two that everyone harps on about..

pg-13 flicks are a load of crap..especially from well established franchises .... movie personal need to start careing more about how good the movie is and less about the cash ...trust me... if you do a quality job more 17 + people will come to see it ... marketing to kids is crap...and i have 4 kids ...i take them to see kids movies...when i want to see a movie..i want to see an adult movie ... not kid/adult crap..save that for shrek or star wars ..... making ghost rider, hitman, ect. pg 13 just makes me wait for rentals ...not for taking kids

Murphy is bound to play his own [fat] sidekick in BHC4, so it doesn't really matter what demographic they target the film at; it'll be balls.

I'm curious, at what point would the Indy franchise have crossed into "ruined" territory.
Ridiculous.

I am so excited for Beverly Hills Cop 4, but not if you're going to ruin the damn franchise. I'll admit, BHC 3 was a little to kid friendly for me and that was rated R. I love all the BHC movies. Brett Ratner, I'm telling you right now, if you don't want to be hated by millions of fans, then please make this fourth installment a tribute to how good the original was. I would like to see good ol' Axel Foley potty mouth, too old for this bullshit, action-packed up the ass, throw some twists and turns, some good comedy, not stupid jokes, and not geared towards kids. Bring the franchise back with a bang and go out with a bang. You have to make it good!
