Deepak Chopra Praises 'The Love Guru'

Mike Myers' latest, The Love Guru, has been sparking up a lot of controversy. There were (and still are) Hindu protests based on the trailers. Then, the British Film Institute declared that it wouldn't screen the film, nor would it be involved with any release of the comedy. Now, we're getting some positive press about the film -- straight from Deepak Chopra. He wrote a post in his blog called Love Guru: Hindu Lions and Hollywood Lambs? back in April, and it's now hitting the wire, since he says that the protests are unwarranted. He discusses previous films and their impacts, the importance of comedy in faith, and his own involvement with the film. "As viewers will find out when the movie is released this summer, no one is more thoroughly skewered in it than I am --- you could even say that I am made to seem preposterous. If I don't take offense and some Hindus do, that doesn't make me superior or more mature or even innately tolerant. I just know the difference between a belly laugh and a diatribe."
The Hollywood Reporter fleshes out the story, discussing Chopra's relationship with Myers -- his books reportedly helped Myers through depression and led to the new character, he got Chopra's blessing before making it, they've popped up together on Iconoclasts, and Myers wrote the forward for Why is God Laughing?
Are the Hindu protesters jumping the gun? Is Chopra being too forgiving? We'll find out soon enough -- the film opens on June 20.

AM I A HINDU? said...
I saw the movie "The Love Guru"[ 88 minutes ] and as far as I am concerned it should be either R-rated or X-rated since the movie is sexual in nature. Almost all reviews about this movie is negative.
Movie is full of very crude jokes & situations.
At least two scenes in the movie will make you sick in your stomach.
One of them, is students studying in a “gurukula” fighting with Guru’s urine. That is disgusting even for those who love all types of comedy.
I cannot believe a world renowned spiritualist & Best Selling author like Dr. Deepak Chopra has come out in defense of this movie.
How can he support an ethically and morally sickening movie? That is the million dollar question.
Let me give him the benefit of the doubt. May be Dr. Chopra was totally unaware of the extend of vulgarity in the movie, until it was released.
Movies like The Party [1968] by Peter Sellers made fun of Indians and their mannerisms. But The Party was very tastefully done and as such even Indians love to watch that. But The Love Guru has absolutely no charm at all.
Even those who are dead against Hindus and Hinduism will find this movie distasteful for its disgusting portrayal of things.
Any parent who wants to take his/her teenager for this movie should take the PG-13 rating seriously.

I think Deepak knew what was on the film. This society is so worried about sexuality that has repressed to a level that it should be something embarrasing. People believe that love should be only done in private, with lights off... in India is quite different. Have you seen some temples where tantra is practiced? Is beautiful, is a free celebration of love, that is what this movie is about. At the beggining you can notice that there is some "sex" under the table, and you can think "oh, another humoristic movie with sex jokes" but the final scene with the elefants was totally great, because it shows that love should be public, should be something that we show on TV every morning instead of who is the greatest new murderer of the country or how bad is economy. I think this movie has a very big message and who knows? maybe a lot of people will feel atracted to Hindu phillosophy, now thats a big step mate.
