Fan Rant: Hey Hollywood -- Give Us a 'Jersey Boys' Movie!

So after what's felt like a gazillion years, I finally managed to catch Jersey Boys on Broadway last night ... and all I could think about the entire time was why this hasn't been turned into a movie yet. (But in a good way.) In the past few years, we've had Chicago, Rent, Hairspray and The Producers, with Mamma Mia and Nine on the horizon. Where's Jersey Boys? The damn show gets a standing ovation every night, not to mention it's got a great story, great characters and, well, fantastic music. It'd be like Goodfellas: The Musical -- and something like that would probably rake in more cash (from both men and women) than most of these movie-musicals to date.
I haven't had this much fun watching a musical in years; probably since Wicked (which is another one that needs to hit the big screen at some point). But when I sat there, picturing how they could adapt each scene and make it really work on the big screen, one annoying issue kept beating me over the head: Who in the world do you cast? Since Hollywood is all about sticking names in these sorts of roles, you'd need four young guys who not only can sing (Valli gets UP there), but also come with thick Jersey accents. Off the top of my head, I don't know of any young, Hollywood stars who fit the bill. MAYBE Zac Efron, but he might be a tad too young ... and I've never seen him do a tough, Jersey accent (honestly, I don't know if I want to ...)
So I'm thinking: Maybe that's why this musical hasn't hit the big screen yet? Maybe they can't find four name actors to play The Four Seasons. But then I realized ... they don't have to. Jersey Boys also comes with an excellent supporting cast; from mobsters to wives to girlfriends -- they're all in it, and they don't really sing at all. There are your names! If I were casting this for the big screen, I'd go out and find four unknown guys who can really sing (and do the whole "Jersey" thing), throw them in the movie and sprinkle a bunch of well-known actors around them in supporting roles. OR, you can grab the guys from the Broadway show ... but they're kinda, well, busy at the moment.
Great, lock it in -- let's roll! Oh wait, this show is filled with more F-bombs and filthy language than all the shows on Broadway combined. An R-rated movie-musical? Would Hollywood take that chance? Because there's no way you could tame the language -- this is who these guys were; this is how they spoke. This is how the movie would sound, and there's no way around it. Is that why it hasn't been made yet? Is Hollywood afraid of making an R-rated movie-musical?
Well, in the words of my good pals from Jersey: Get the f*ck over it! Jersey Boys needs to become a major motion picture within the next two years. Someone HAS to get behind it and run -- because, if done right, this sucker could be huge ... and a heckuva lotta fun.
What do you think? Did you see Jersey Boys? Would it make for a great movie? Let's tawkaboutit!

100% agree with you on a Jersey Boys movie. But I could not disagree with you more on a movie based on Wicked. It's a good show. I've seen it three times. But think about just this one thing. The highlight of the show is the Defying Gravity number. Very powerful moment. But how on earth do you duplicate that on film? Shoot it in 3-D? Just wouldn't have near the impact it should. In fact, I seem to recall an interview with Ron Howard about how much it would lose on screen and that he passed. Shame too. The Dancing Through Life number would've been great on film.

Erik... I agree that they should make "Jersey Boys' as an R.
It'd be like Sopranos - The Musical. Especially with the Frankie Valli 'connection'. I'd put some of his Soprano castmates in supporting roles and go the 'unknown' route. If Efron is any kind of actor, he could do the accent.

I'm not sure. I am not one to movies of musicals, and I adore Jersey Boys. However, there are just things in Jersey Boys the work so well on stage, but they wouldn't work on screen, certain lines might appear over the top or something. Also, one of the amazing things about the show is the energy you get from seeing it live. How can you duplicate that in a movie. I'm not saying the a Jersey Boys movie will automatically be terrible, but the whole idea makes me nervous.

I do believe there are plans to make a Wicked movie but not for another 10 years or so.

I just saw 'Jersey Boys' in Cincinnati last night for the second time in three weeks...and loved it -- again! I've already told my wife this show is headed for the big screen; although, upon some research, I find that Spielberg is the apparent front-runner for screen rights. I think Scorsese would be a strong contender to direct the movie version; and I do agree with the person who said to get the guys from the stage production to play the main parts, and get name actors to support them. Since Joe Pesci is a character in the show, let him play the mobster DeCarlo(gee....what a stretch!) I can't wait for the movie. It can certainly be transferred to the big screen with the right director at the helm. And I'd love to see Christopher Kale Jones cast as Valli; he's mesmorizing on the stage.
