Seth Rogen's 'The Green Hornet' Snags a Release Date

It is indeed happening. Entertainment Weekly has reported that Seth Rogen's Green Hornet movie has the go-ahead, even down to its release date: June 25th, 2010.Rogen is still set to star as Britt Reid, the bored newspaper publisher by day, crimefighter by night. He is also still writing the script with his partner, Evan Goldberg. But no director has yet been named, nor has Kato been cast. (If you remember, Rogen favors Stephen Chow. Sounds like he still does.)
Rogen's attachment to the project was reported a year ago, but given how many Green Hornet movies have fallen apart, I don't think anyone was holding their breath.
Were they? I mean, this was once a property attached to everyone from George Clooney to Jake Gyllenhaal. Kevin Smith spent years trying to develop it. Who knew Rogen would be the one to finally do it?
This news comes on the heels of CHUD's brief chat with Rogen, where he was saying the film still hadn't been green lit. He discussed the tone they were trying to set with the film -- it isn't going to be bumbling humor, and it will feature some serious action. Rogen and Goldberg are hoping the comedy comes from the unconventional relationship between the Hornet and Kato. Perhaps that will soothe the doubts of our readers, who were quite furious when the news broke. Have you become more reconciled to it, or are you still wishing for what could have been?

On Seth Rogen's IMDB quotes, he reveals a disliking for Internet nerds and sums up why I dislike (most of) them. Top man.

Too bad, I had plans of enjoying a serious version of this, could have happened. So many actors out there that could fit better and perhaps Jet Li, it would have been sweet. By the way, the "unconventional" relationship between Cato and his employer was already taken to unsurpassed levels by Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. It wasn't the Green Hornet but everyone knows it was inspired in it.

Lets look at some facts that have been overlooked or pushed under the rug by SOOO many here and in Hollywood.
1. The character predated Batman and the ONLY tie in was in 1966 when the same producer for the TV show did the TV Green Hornet.
2. The Character is not a superhero, he has no super powers, no super villains, he is at best a masked crime fighter. Really he is no different than any TV/Film crime fighter except he happens to have a secret identity.
3. The Character did not come from the comic world; comics only explored their version of the story after the radio show was already established. The later 90's Comic series further explored an alternate universe of the Green Hornet world. Not too uncommon for the comic world but not congruent with the characters true origins and world.
4. The character is a hard driving young (33) successful businessman who is dedicated to fight crime in his community and wherever it occurs. NOT a lazy billionaire playboy that is pure recent media hype.
5. He is seen as a criminal in the criminal world so law enforcement is always after him. The criminals hate him because they fear him, Kato, and the Black Beauty.
6. The Green Hornet is a brilliant strategist and foils his foes in a well played out mental chess game (SEE Jason Borne or James Bond) Kato assists in strategy, weapons development and construction and muscle when needed.
5. The Green Hornet is fully capable in hand-to-hand combat in most every situation. He has a totally different style than Kato. He is in top physical condition.
6. Kato is fully competent in any situation of combat. He is so confident that his attitude comes across as smug. But make no mistake he takes crime fighting and combat very seriously. It would be a very rare occurrence if he were bested in hand-to-hand combat.
7. The TV series was canceled because the producer was not allotted enough TV time to further develop the character. ABC only allowed 30m and Dozier insisted on 60m for the second season. ABC refused so dozier canceled the series.
8. Production costs were out of control on Batman (A Huge hit) and budgets were getting tight so this was also a factor in sidelining the Green Hornet.
9. Keaton worked as Batman because he has shown he an actor that has depth and intensity. It makes no difference that he was in a comedic role prior. He is/was capable of VERY serious roles and can be very dark, which is needed for the Dark Knight. Same goes for Robin Williams as Joker, Riddler. He has proven himself in serious roles and can also be a believable villain and can also be very dark. Seth??
10. The Green Hornet does not exist in the DC or Marvel universe.
11. Seth has in the past said this will be a comedy then said it will be an action film just like Pineapple Express (due out this fall), so who knows what he/they will decide on.
The were able to hold the elements together for Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Elektra, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman, Punisher, Blade so why not do the same for the Green Hornet? The Hornet is more like a Jason Borne, or a James Bond without the MI5-CIA connection. Hard fighting, mental strategy game, interesting gadget technology.
Anything less that what the character is or was created to be is just a slap in the face to all of fandom and aficionados of the genre. People do not want something different they want something familiar but updated to take advantage of the wonderful film technology we have today.
Filmgoers want to leave the film after paying their $10 saying “…damn that was awesome!” Not “Damn I could have blown that $10 bucks elsewhere and been happier.”
Fans are not looking for another Rush Hour film, they did that and it was fine for what it was.
Impress us Seth! Don’t rip us off!

This movie should have Jason Statham as Green Hornet, someone who can fight and is dark and mysterious, someone who makes the criminals and cops scared. Who is Seth Rogan going to scare? a Kato has to be the baddest around and that would be Jet Li in my opinion. This movie could bring new life into the Green Hornet franchise. New comics, other movies. Green Hornet has been around forever, there is a reason, stick with what has worked. Just because some of the movies Seth Rogan was in were popular and made money doesn't mean he should get a Legendary title like Green Hornet to do, especially writing and staring in, I would be cool with him being the coffee guy. Don't get me wrong I like what he has done, but this is an insult to the Green Hornet, the holders of the estate of the
Green Hornet should be outraged, it could mean the end of anything Green Hornet again if this movie bombs.

This guy Seth, and the Green Hornet would not be a movie I would go see.
I agree with the points #4 mentioned. Should be serious and has a lot of potential. No matter who they put in the Kato role, it won't have the same sense Bruce Lee brought (unbeatable). I think the GH should always have the upper hand. Perhaps if the GH character is a bit old to be fighting on the streets, it makes sense to have a hired hand (Kato) who is younger. But in the modern world, combat is less hand to hand and more likely tech and gun-centric. Less need for a Bruce Lee.

I don't know much about Seth Rogen, but from what I can see, he would most definitely NOT be an appropriate choice to portray Brit Reid / The Green Hornet. This is based simply on his physical appearance. No offense to Seth, and it's not just a matter of his weight. The actor who plays the part, in my opinion, should be good-looking with fairly sharp facial features and in great physical condition...athletically built. If he weren't already associated with the role of Batman, I'd say Christian Bale would fit the bill quite well. It occurred to me that Thomas Gibson could also pull it off with a little conditioning. I'm sure there are others, but I just can't see Rogen in the role. I've been saying for years that Green Hornet is a film that needs to be made, and if properly done (casting, storyline, effects, marketing, etc.) could undoubtedly be an absolute blockbuster. I have never been involved in the film industry, but would love the opportunity to be involved in such a project. I think I have some really good ideas for the film.
