Having been one of the ten people on earth who hasn't read The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons, it's no surprise that I'm not terribly amped for the follow-up flick from Ron Howard. But, I know I am in the minority here, so feast your eyes on a new batch of photos (courtesy of Trovacinema) of Tom Hanks and company hard at work on the big-screen Angels and Demons. Most of the cast is pictured in the photos, and by the looks of it, everyone seems to be having a grand old time on location in Rome.
Demons will center on Robert Langdon (Hanks), who's smack dab in the middle of a fight between The Vatican and The Illuminati. Once again, the Harvard professor will have to take down an ancient conspiracy, but this time they have an eye on assassinating high-ranking members of the church. Casting finally finished back in April with the addition of Ewan McGregor (which is a good thing for me, because if anyone can make me sit through a film I normally wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole, it's McGregor), and Ayelet Zurer as the daughter of a CERN physicist looking to solve her father's murder.
Shooting on the picture just began last week, and Howard will finish up location shots in the next three weeks. Then the production will move back to the states where they can complete interior shoots on the Sony lot. So as long as a SAG strike can be avoided, Howard should be able to get the production in on time.
Angels and Demons is scheduled for release on May 15th, 2009.

Seriously, Angels is a lot more entertaining than the Code. A lot more action, so much in facts that it makes the Code look like a documentary about a book or something, and IMO is a lot better book all around, so I hope it will make for a much better movie. The popcorn kind anyways.

Akiva (writer of I am Legend and Da Vinci Code) is the writer. He jacked both of those up for no good reason. So I see no reason why I should want to see this.
He should be banned from adaptations. Period. End of story.

The Da Vinci Code should have been a foolproof solid action movie, a modern-day Indiana Jones. But Goldsman and Howard did the one thing with the movie that I thought impossible: made it drag. I read the book in maybe 3 days, just zipped right through it. It wasn't Faulkner but it was a fun time killer and an ideal blueprint for a movie. But it was slow movie, almost completely devoid of energy. And this was a story that literally anyone (even the likes of Uwe Boll) should have been able to make into a fun movie. No such luck.
And I stopped reading Angels and Demons when I realized that it was the exact same book as Da Vinci Code, only with different artifacts plugged into the formula. Don't care. Sorry. Not even Ewan McGregor's presence can convince me to see this.

Yes, but Angels was written before DaVinci Code. So Davinci Code is basically a remake (rewrite) of the original. And I felt the original was the much better book.

Sadly, the film adaptation of a novel often does not live up to the book, but I suspect this has much to do with the fact that there are so many people with input on a film. With the novel, it's mostly the writer and editor (if the author is lucky). For a time, I wanted to write screenplays...until I discovered that writing a screenplay is a lot like giving your baby up for adoption. If you do ever see it again, you probably won't recognize it! So I stuck with writing novels. I'm really looking forward to this film, though. A&D is, indeed, a better book than DVC. As for McGregor's involvement, hey, I only went to see Moulin Rouge because he was in it, but I ended up really liking the film. At first, I couldn't see him in the role of Ventresca, but I recently re-read the book, and he does suit the character in the most important aspects--if Ron Howard doesn't make him use an Italian accent. (The book indicates Ventresca speaks "perfect English.")
