'Death Race' Trailer Hits
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Trailers and Clips

The first trailer for Paul "The Other" Anderson's Death Race (loose) remake has arrived online over at Yahoo, and it feels like a mix between the video game Twisted Metal and The Running Man. Jason Statham stars as a prison inmate who's recruited by the warden (Joan Allen) to drive in a, well, death race where, if he wins, he gains his freedom. Throw in a bunch of seedy side characters (played by folks like Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson) and you get what looks to be a decent late-summer action flick that's like the Mad Max version of The Fast and the Furious ... or something like that. Seriously, though, they should've just called this one Twisted Metal and adapted the popular video game -- then at least we would've gotten that freaky clown truck thingy. Oh well.
Death Race crashes into theaters on August 22. What do you think of the trailer?

As you said, a decent late summer flick. It would be unfair to compare this new movie to the original B movie as each were created in different cultural atmospheres. I think this new one is inline with what we'd expect from "Death Race" if it was created brand new (with a larger budget) nowadays.

As much as I hate the 'there are no rules.' line, I think this looks like a fun B-movie.

so Death Race meets Longest Yard. (Warden pulls strings to get professional sport player into prison to play in the big game and then the warden bets against the team and tries to sabotage them).
I hated the remake of The Longest Yard with Sandler. But that movie didn't have explosions and cars with machine guns!

The only thing that would make this a must-watch for me would be insane cameos. Show a clip reel of previous races, throw in a bit part for Stallone and Carradine, get Corman to put his flourish on it. Solid gold.
As far as the trailer goes, it really does tell too much, but it gets the point across. Don't go in expecting Shakespeare, go in expecting Bruckheimer/Bay. Could be fun.

Could they possibly have told you more about the plot? I mean, the fact that the blond woman who he is racing for turns on him is totally predictable, but do they have to tell you in the trailer? sheesh.

Looks like fun, except it's directed by the non-talented Paul Anderson. That, and the subplot about who really killed his wife. Something tells me this movie'd be a lot more fun without getting so serious, and just letting us root for a real bad guy.

I enjoyed Death Race 2000. And this looks to be a decent (loose) remake. Let's hope that Paul Anderson can pull it off.
