Paulo Coelho Gets Crafty with Film Adaptations

Although Paulo Coelho is one of the world's most translated living authors, his work hasn't exactly littered the big screen. This isn't due to a lack of interest, but rather the writer's reluctance to allow his work to be adapted into film. However, in the wake of projects like the Sarah Michelle Gellar-led Veronika Decides to Die and Eleven Minutes, he's taking on an adaptation his way.
Variety reports that Coelho's spearheading a project to adapt his book, The Witch of Portobello. But he's not looking to sell it to a big studio, or whip up a run-of-the-mill indie production. Instead, he wants to create a fan-made film mash-up.
Since the book is "divided into 15 narrators who interact with and interpret the lead character Athena," the writer has put out a call for filmmakers from across the world to submit interpretations of each of the narrators to his account on MySpace. All of the film's particulars are completely up to the person creating the piece, even language, and once they've been submitted and selected, a professional editor will come on board to make it into a 52-minute television movie.
It sounds like it will be a DIY Palindromes, but probably with less confusing plot twists. It could easily be a mess, since there's not a lot of control in how these blips are made, but I could also see it being very cool. At the very least, it's an interesting take on fan/viewer participation. Also, this is one of those rare chances for fans to have the control over how a beloved piece of writing is adapted.
