Disney Unveils 'Toy Story' in 4-D!
Screw all this 3-D is the future stuff -- what I want is some hardcore 4-D! Kick it up a notch, ya know? I really want to feel this sucker. Well, thankfully, those lunatics over at Disney are already on it -- and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they've unveiled a new attraction at both Disney theme parks in Florida and California called Toy Story Mania! And it's in 4-D! Hell yeah! Basically, riders throw on a pair of 3-D glasses and are taken through an attraction that has them "appearing to shrink to about toy-size so they might scoot through Andy's room firing virtual projectiles at 3-D targets while collecting points for accuracy." Um, sweet. Can I live there temporarily? (Actually, I did work at Disney World briefly back in the day, and the magic kinda goes away when it's 100 degrees with 100% humidity and you're wearing a ridiculous pair of Lederhosen. Did I just go there? I think I did.)
Anyway, Toy Story Mania! joins a bunch of Pixar-inspired attractions at the theme parks (Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., A Bug's Life), and will soon be joined by Cars Land. Due in 2012, this sucker costs $1.1 billion, will span 12 acres and will hopefully kick a whole lotta ass. For $1.1 billion (billion!), it better. Has anyone visited Disney in the past few weeks and checked out Toy Story Mania? I know it opened in Florida at the end of May. Anyone? Woody? Buzz?

First off, don't think you're getting off that easy. Disney World? Lederhosen? We're going to need a full post on that someday.
Second, 4-D sounds like it's going to be awesome. But I don't know what 1.1 Billion dollars worth of coolness looks like. That's insanity.
I'm glad to hear that Disneyworld is getting it too. Saves me the airfare charges.

I was at Disneyworld last week and the Toy Story Mania ride is by far my favorite (not that I was keen on many of them). It's just how they described it, you ride around in a two person car, from screen to screen, and you shoot at various things. The 4th dimension I guess would be the air that blows at you when things fly by and such. It's very, very fun, and very popular. I noticed that all of the pixar stuff we did was above average and usually the most fun (they have two live, interactive CGI character shows, one with Mike Wikowsky from Monsters, Inc. doing standup, and one with Krush from Finding Nemo talking about what it's like to be a turtle. Both are amazing from a technical standpoint. There's also a Buzz Lightyear ride that's similar to the Toy Story Mania one inwhich you shoot lazers at Zerg's men. I have no interest in going back to any Disney theme park, but I'd make an exception once all the pixar stuff is done, because everything they have at the parks is great.

There was an episode of "Food Network Challenge" recently that featured the new Toy Story ride. The cake designers had to build 3-foot high cakes based on various Disney-Pixar rides. Each designer got to visit with Disney and see and/or ride the attraction. The Toy Story ride wasn't open, but they had footage of what it was like.

The name of the ride is actually Toy Story's Midway Mania ("Toy Story" is actually quite small on the marquee). Check your Disney news sites, you'll see that Toy Story Mania! was the name that the marketing division wanted and refused to leave alone even after being told that it was not going to be the name of the ride.
