Seth Rogen's 'Green Hornet' Gets a Teaser ... Site

On the final episode of Dinner for Five, Jon Favreau and guests discussed the legendary "is" credit. The only person at the table to have received an "is" credit in his lifetime was, surprisingly, Peter Billingsley, who was given an "is" credit for The Dirt Bike Kid. The "is" credit is indeed rare, so when it comes along we must congratulate the actor or actress enjoying this royal honor. And, as you can see above, Hollywood has given out another "is" credit, and it's gone to ... Seth Rogen.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen ... Seth Rogen is The Green Hornet. Sony has established a teaser site for the previously-announced film, which comes with a nice shade of green and a release date of June 25, 2010. Still a far way to go, but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. Rogen will play newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who, at night, fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet with Kato, a martial arts expert, at his side. This version of GH was written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), and there's no director currently attached.
So, who's looking forward to this one?

Having actually having seen the show; I take the news of Seth Rogen playing the Green Hornet the same as if you had said: "Seth Rogen is playing the Dark Knight!".
How you'd think that go?
Talk about a miscast. It's like skipping Batman Begins and going straight to '97's Batman & Robin! I'll TRY to keep an open mind, but the Green Hornet was as serious as Batman is.

It's too early to offer an opinion one way or the other really. Seth is probably thinking of playing it straight. Loosing weight and not being eclipsed by someone like Jason Scott Lee. The suits are thinking Green Hornet w/ a healthy dose of comedy. What makes Christopher Nolan's Batman movies work is the fact he takes the world in which they exist serious (Hit Me! Come on HIT ME!) and Christian Bale's gravitas. So, look to what works and emulate.

Lets look at some facts that have been overlooked or pushed under the rug by SOOO many in Hollywood.
1. The character predated Batman and the ONLY tie in was in 1966 when the same producer for the TV show did the TV Green Hornet.
2. The Character is not a superhero, he has no super powers, no super villains, he is at best a masked crime fighter. Really he is no different than any TV/Film crime fighter except he happens to have a secret identity.
3. The Character did not come from the comic world; comics only explored their version of the story after the radio show was already established. The later 90's Comic series further explored an alternate universe of the Green Hornet world. Not too uncommon for the comic world but not congruent with the characters true origins and world.
4. The character is a hard driving young (33) successful businessman who is dedicated to fight crime in his community and wherever it occurs. NOT a lazy billionaire playboy that is pure recent media hype.
5. He is seen as a criminal in the criminal world so law enforcement is always after him. The criminals hate him because they fear him, Kato, and the Black Beauty.
6. The Green Hornet is a brilliant strategist and foils his foes in a well played out mental chess game (SEE Jason Borne or James Bond) Kato assists in strategy, weapons development and construction and muscle when needed.
5. The Green Hornet is fully capable in hand-to-hand combat in most every situation. He has a totally different style than Kato. He is in top physical condition.
6. Kato is fully competent in any situation of combat. He is so confident that his attitude comes across as smug. But make no mistake he takes crime fighting and combat very seriously. It would be a very rare occurrence if he were bested in hand-to-hand combat.
7. The TV series was canceled because the producer was not allotted enough TV time to further develop the character. ABC only allowed 30m and Dozier insisted on 60m for the second season. ABC refused so dozier canceled the series.
8. Production costs were out of control on Batman (A Huge hit) and budgets were getting tight so this was also a factor in sidelining the Green Hornet.
9. Keaton worked as Batman because he has shown he an actor that has depth and intensity. It makes no difference that he was in a comedic role prior. He is/was capable of VERY serious roles and can be very dark, which is needed for the Dark Knight. Same goes for Robin Williams as Joker, Riddler. He has proven himself in serious roles and can also be a believable villain and can also be very dark. Seth??
10. The Green Hornet does not exist in the DC or Marvel universe.
11. Seth has in the past said this will be a comedy then said it will be an action film just like Pineapple Express (due out this fall), so who knows what he/they will decide on.
The were able to hold the elements together for Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Elektra, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman, Punisher, Blade so why not do the same for the Green Hornet? The Hornet is more like a Jason Borne, or a James Bond without the MI5-CIA connection. Hard fighting, mental strategy game, interesting gadget technology.
Anything less that what the character is or was created to be is just a slap in the face to all of fandom and aficionados of the genre. People do not want something different they want something familiar but updated to take advantage of the wonderful film technology we have today.
Filmgoers want to leave the film after paying their $10 saying “…damn that was awesome!” Not “Damn I could have blown that $10 bucks elsewhere and been happier.”
Fans are not looking for another Rush Hour film, they did that and it was fine for what it was.
Impress us Seth! Don’t rip us off!

First off, in Batman's defense, I wouldn't call him "lazy." Second, while Robin Williams auditioned for the Joker and the Riddler, he didn't play either of them.
Third, aside from points 9 and 11, what does anything you've mentioned about the Green Hornet have to do with Seth Rogen playing him? So the Green Hornet doesn't exist in the DC/Marvel universe...great.

Dude,
It's going to be a spoof, obviously. And it's not like the original Green Hornet was that great of a show. The comic book which the TV series was spawned from only printed 7 issues and the show only ran 3 episodes and the only reason people even remember it is because Bruce Lee stared as Kato.
The fact that the Green Hornet was a flop gives Rogan and Goldberg a practically clean palette to start with and you KNOW it's going to be hilarious!
Oh yea, to the douche that compared the Green Hornet to Batman...are you f*#@ing kidding me? Unless, of course, you are comparing the Green Hornet to the cheesy Batman TV series.
Anyone who is a fan of Seth & Adam's other writings will be sure to love this one one, as well.

I'll say it again, you need an actor like Jason Statham to play Green Hornet. The owners of the Green Hornet franchise should ultimaltly want to revive the Green Hornet name and get other things going with it, money making would be the key. What the hell could they get going with a spoof of a proven character? The Green Hornet has been around sice the 1930's, he has always been dark, and serious. What kind of sex jokes and weed jokes could be incorporated in Green Hornet? If Rogan wants to go that way, do and Epic Movie II, not Green Hornet. There are tons of Green Hornet fans out there, make them happy not the Seth Rogen fans, I love the character and what he is all about. The movie should stick to that and let Rogen go do something else he is good at. I have loved what he has done too but the two don't mix. Oil and water, Everyone should step back and rethink this one. What kind of fight sceenes would you get, which is what the Green Hornet would get into, multiple times. And he is wonderful at fighting, as is his partner Kato.

This is so ridiculous. Nobody wants to see Seth Rogen as Britt Reid. Why Rogen would even allow his name to be attached to this "IS" beyond rational comprehension. Even if he manages to reintroduce a bunch of slack jawed, basement dwelling, weed-tards to the Green Hornet, He is still going to make a mockery of classic material that deserves more respect than to be played by a guy that looks like a live action version of Drooper from the Banana Splits. C'mon Rogen, give us a break will ya, you can work out, take H2H combat classes, and drink a oil tanker full of wheat grass juice, but you are always going to look like a beady-eyed, under-bitten, mole faced, weird toothed, as un-Britt Reid as is humanly possible, curly headed, sandwich shoveling, backne farm.
