Favreau Reveals 'Avengers' Line-Up

Over at USA Today, they did a little feature on the Avengers movie, and while most of it is old news (Tony Stark at the end of The Incredible Hulk, Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man, who they are, what this means, etc.), there was one new item for fans to chew on. Jon Favreau revealed the Avengers line-up Marvel was currently toying with: "The ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. I would love to see that." (And no, he hasn't been confirmed as The Avengers director. The possibility isn't even brought up in this article.) Of course, what this means for Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish's Ant-Man movie is anyone's guess. Marvel's goal is to get The Avengers in theatres by 2011, by which point Thor and Captain America will have gotten their solo origin movies. But will Ant-Man have gotten his? Wright is busy with Scott Pilgrim, which is due to be released in 2009. Could he get Ant-Man off the ground in time for him to join Earth's mightiest heroes? So many questions!
Personally, I hope Marvel takes a deep breath sometime soon, and scales the schedule back a tad. I don't want to see any of these movies rushed into production, reeking of a rushed deadline, and I feel the characters need to be established before you can say "Avengers, assemble!" While the movie will undoubtedly be an enormous success with longtime fans, they are going to need those solo movies to lure in newcomers -- especially the younger set, who are essential to keeping these legendary heroes going.
But hey, let's look on the bright side: That is a pretty sweet, old-school line-up, isn't it? Well, except for poor Wasp -- another superheroine bites the dust.

I like the choices; but I also think they should put Wasp in there in an effort to be as true to the original lineup as possible. I'll concede that there probably isn't a way to make an effective Avengers movie without Captain America, even if he wasn't technically part of the group until issue 3 or so.
Also, I really don't see the need for Ant Man or Wasp, if they included her, to have their own movies. Frankly, these are secondary characters at best, and don't necessitate their own film in my opinion.

Agreed on all counts, Paul.
This is the line-up I'm expecting to see. I still worry about how Thor will fit into this "universe", but I can't wait for this. I think Marvel has done everything right, so far, with respect to setting this up...

I wouldn't worry about the Wasp. She wil undoubtedly appear in the Ant Man movie. Then her role can be expanded upon in the Avengers movie.

With Hulk and Thor on the same team, who the hell are they going to have as the villian??? They could set up the Leader for Hulk 2 and/or The Mandarin for IM2, so they can have minions and big super-mechs I suppose. But it could easliy get over the top and VERY campy... especially if they go with a drove of Asgardian villians. Also, how will the Red Skull or Baron Zemo play into the Avengers??? I am sure that one or both will be in the Cap movie.
As for the team itself... I would have liked to see Wasp and even Blackwidow (even though she was not an original founding member... I forgave X-Men for having Iceman as a kid, Beast an independant that didn't join until the 3rd movie, and Angel never really became a member). Anyway... a couple of fem-fatales would have been good to round out the team.
