Amber Heard and William Hurt Fish 'The River Why'
Between her stint as Mandy Lane, and upcoming work on films like Pineapple Express and The Informers, Amber Heard seemed to be on a specific path -- cute girl, in a variety of the normal roles for someone her age. However, I never would have imagined that she would take on the world of fly fishing. The Hollywood Reporter posts that she and William Hurt have joined Zach Gilford in The River Why. The project is an adaptation of the novel by David James Duncan, and is being directed by Matt Leutwyler.A coming-of-age fishing tale, the film will focus on "a young man named Gus Orviston (Gilford) and his quest for an elusive rainbow trout, which is a metaphor for the man's internal search for self-knowledge." Heard plays the object of his affection, "a tomboy fly-fisher," and Hurt plays his dad. It's not the most exciting description for a film, but maybe there's something more to it.
While I can't even imagine her fly-fishing, this project should definitely help to keep Heard from being pigeon-holed into certain types of roles, assuming that she pulls it off. The film heads into production in Oregon early next month.

I've given away twenty or thirty copies of this book. Evrybody loved it. I suggest you buy a copy and read it. You might discover why this is a film that could be as important as the book. I've got my fingers crossed.

I not only read the book, but the script for this movie back in 1987. They've started to make this movie at least 2 or 3 times.
The book is a good read. The object of the book though is to find the source of the River Why. The descriptions used in the book as he travels to find this "source" combines recognizable descriptions of parts of about 3 different rivers in Oregon and the final section is based on Johnson Creek in Gresham, Oregon. His mother fishes bait and his dad is a "tweedy" fly-fisher. Really enjoyed the book. Hope the final movie follows it somewhat. The part where he meets the girl is particularly interesting.
