Con Update: Fox Digs in, Paramount Pulls Out?
Filed under: Paramount, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, ComicCon
So, who's going to San Diego Comic Con this year? Are you excited? Pumped up? Mildly interested? Pretending you don't care in order to impress someone of the opposite sex, but deep inside really do care and, as such, are counting down the seconds? It's okay, we're friends -- we can talk. This year, myself, Scott Weinberg and Elisabeth Rappe will be on the ground at Con representing Cinematical, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we're ready to get our geek on. Aside from the very cool Masters of the Web Panel on Thursday morning (7/24) at 10am (which yours truly will take part in), we've been anxiously waiting to see which studios show up and with what product. Looks like Fox was first out of the gate, as I've been told they'll be there with bells on ... along with panels for Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg, John Moore and Mila Kunis expected to attend so far) and The Day The Earth Stood Still (Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Scott Derickson and Erwin Stoff expected to attend so far). There will also be an advanced screening of The Rocker, with Rainn Wilson in attendance for a Q&A. Of course, this is all tentative until everything is finalized next month.
On the other hand, Anne Thompson brings us the unfortunate news that Paramount will not be hosting a panel or bringing any stars to this year's Con. Apparently, a Paramount spokesman told Thompson that "the timing was off this year." Thus, fans will miss out on potential presentations of G.I. Joe, Star Trek, Transformers 2 and The Last Airbender. Sucks. Though you never know ... plans may change and there could still be a surprise or two. Here's hoping we get something, anything, from one of these highly-anticipated films.
UPDATE: Paramount's fishin' around today, so I don't think they're out just yet. More when we know ...

I love how all the movie blogs are complaining about Paramount not going to COMIC!!!!!!!con. I hope this starts a trend and movie companies stay the hell out! Nowhere in the COMIC con's title is movie. Con used to be fun and about comics, now it's filled with greasy film fans trying to pirate film clips from panels. The COMIC fans are getting kicked to the curb for shit like Firefly **cough**Cowboy Bebop**cough**. The first time i saw Stan Lee speak there was a pretty good sized crowd, fast forward a few years and there are lines down the block like someone is giving out hundred dollar bills just to be in the big hall. Most of the people there didn't even know what the hell the line was for, but they were happier than pigs in shit when they heard movie clip/trailer and free crap. Mark my words, one day the COMIC con will be dead and it will have been from Movies. And then what will Hollywood do for ideas?

The same thing they've always done, make terrible adaptations from other mediums.
In all seriousness though, I generally don't mind the film panels. I mean they're all pretty much held in the same hall, and if you don't want to see it, don't go. It's not like there's a dearth of other fun stuff to do.

I can understand the plight of “die hard” comic fan being put off by the enormous crowds gathering because the Motion Picture, TV, video game, and collectibles industry's presence keeps growing every year at Comic-Con. But let's face it, without the movie industry creating X-Men, Batman Begins, and Spiderman Comic-Con and comics themselves would be limping along. Marvel and DC were ready to sell off their characters to independent comics or Michael Jackson before the comic movie boom of this decade.
Did you go see Iron Man or The Hulk? Do you watch Heroes, The Sarah Conner Chronicles, BSG, Supernatural, or Stargate? Are you eager to see The Dark Knight, Hellboy II, The Punisher, and Star Trek? Have you ever played a video game based on comic book characters? You realize most all of these shows have been in comic form at one time or another? If the answer is yes then I see no reason why the companies that produce the shows and games should not showcase them at a Comic Convention. And if that means Paramount, Fox or WB want to piggyback other ventures that might interest this type of fan well can you really fault them?
If Comics are your only interest and if fat, scruffy trolls who are there only there for eBay purposes really aggravates you go to Wonder-Con in San Francisco. If it weren’t for Comic-Con being so fantastic these days I would never have started buying comics again. San Diego is the perfect venue for this event. The Gas Lamp District is very nice, PetCo Park is easy for parking, and the beaches and hotels are beautiful. If you have a bad time at Comic-Con there is something wrong with you not the event. Personally, the worst thing about Comic-Con I can think of is paying in March for a 4-Day pass then having to stand in a ½ mile 2 hour line to pick up the badge. I’d pay the $5 processing fee to have someone just send it to me in the mail but I guess they are worried about people making fake badges. See you all there!!!
