Video of the Day: What Are Your Top 100 Films?
Filed under: Fandom, Trailers and Clips
Everybody has a list. And when you do what I do, you have to have more than one list. Nine out of ten times, when someone first meets me and finds out what I do for a living, they ask, "So then, what's your favorite movie?" And sometimes I chuck out a few titles, and other times I launch into this longer-than-it-should-be explanation on why one cannot have a favorite movie, or even five favorite movies. But what about 100 favorite movies? Could you name your 100 favorite movies?
Well, this dude did. In the video above, someone created a montage featuring clips from their 100 favorite movies, counting down from 100 all the way to numero uno. It's a bit schizophrenic to watch, but I've gone through it a couple times now, and there are some really fun moments in there, editing-wise. Of course you're not going to agree with all their choices (whichever ones you manage to decipher during the brief second they flash on screen), but it's a cool little tribute and, well, I'm sort of jealous. Because now when someone asks this person what their favorite movie is, they can send over this link and let the video speak for itself.
Question: What's a good amount of movies to have on a favorites list? Should everyone have a top 10, a top 20, a top 50? What number is too little and what number is too much?

I've been through this many times with my friends. We watch movies at an alarming rate, and we decided that 100 was the best number. Given that any given mood could cause you to add five or ten diffent movies to your top 10 or 20, and 50 barely covered all of the genres adequately, 100 seemed safest. It seems to give us all a chance to get a wide sampling on the list. Even 100 gets hairy around the cutoff line. I know my personal favorites vary widely depending on the day, the weather, the person asking the question, my mood, etc.

Honestly, it depends on how into movies you are. Most people could probably narrow their favorites down to 20 quite easily. Die-hard movie fans could only perhaps do that for a particular genre.
I think 50's a good number. Either way, check out FlickChart.com (I'm not affiliated with them). They're in beta, but they have a "this-or-that" voting system that ranks your favorite movies for you, making a top 20, 50, or even 100 list really easy.

That guy should totally edit the Oscar montages.

I think a top 10 or 20 is sufficient. If your top films fluctuate much based on your mood, then I'd say you're fickle. Every so often a new flick will squeeze its way into my favorites, but it'll take some doing to crack my top films of all time. There are very few instant faves.
Once your rankings get to be a certain length, I think they tend to become more arbitrary (and yes, I know they're arbitrary to begin with). But with a top 5 or 10, I can look at the movies and justify their placement. How do you really distinguish between your favorite 73rd and 74th, though? At that point it is more about mood and less about what you truly enjoy more. That's what I think anyway.

It's really hard to do just ten. I have a top twenty that constantly changes (at least 11-20 do), but I could easily do 30 and probably 50 without breaking a sweat.
A top 100 is pushing it maybe... I've definitely seen 100 movies I've liked, but I'm not sure if there were 100 movies I LOVED enough to do something like this, you know?

I'm going to be totally honest and admit that I am a compulsive list-maker. I try to keep a list of 100 favorite movies, but it had been months since I had done anything with that list. So over the last week or so, I decided to go whole hog and compiled a list of every movie that I love. It's fun for me. I don't know why.
