Fan Rant: Do We Really Need 'Friends: The Movie'?

Here's a stat that may or may not blow your mind: According to Box Office Mojo, Sex and the City has grossed $312 million worldwide. Yup. $312,533,654 to be exact -- for a movie based on a hit HBO show that went off the air a few years ago. Since we all know what happens when Hollywood gets a look at those kinds of numbers, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict what the future holds: plenty more TV-to-movie adaptations. We're practically guaranteed another Sex and the City flick, and earlier today Monika brought us news that the long-rumored Friends movie might be moving forward.
Honestly, why wouldn't it move forward? You're telling me Matt Leblanc, whose last credit on IMDb is Joey, is holding out for a massive paycheck? Same goes for Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, with the latter being the only one getting decent big-screen work (though, truth be told, she's about two movies away from becoming yesterday's news). The others are all showing up in bit parts, directing films that don't go anywhere and/or trying desperately to make the TV thing work again. Fact is, together they're a pot of gold. Apart and, well, we don't really care, do we?
But could a re-emergence on the big screen revive these careers? Could they somehow find a way to take the cutesy sitcom and turn it into a feature film people would actually want to see? Could Friends: The Movie make more money at the box office than Sex and the City? And should we care?
I don't care, that's for sure.
While I enjoyed the show when it was on the air, it ended in the right place and I couldn't care less what Rachel, Monika, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross are up to now. Oh, did someone get married? Divorced? Hit by a car? Fun! And how weird would it look to actually have the cast of Friends out amongst real people in a real city, and not on the same four sets? Honestly, I don't even think people could handle it. Are Monika and Rachel REALLY shopping on Madison Avenue??? Are there REALLY black people drinking coffee in Central Perk??? Say it ain't so?
Yes, I understand so many of you adore this show and love it with all your heart and soul -- and that's cute; seriously, it is. But you have to admit this isn't going to work on the big screen. A Thanksgiving special? Sure. Crank up the laugh track and bring them all back for a nice, hour-long reunion. But when you take away the laugh track and place these characters in a very real environment, are people going to buy it?
It worked for Sex and the City because the show never had a laugh track and was shot on location in NYC. To me, a Friends movie would be like producing an Everybody Loves Raymond movie, or a King of Queens movie ... it would just look and feel weird.* Sometimes we, as consumers of all things TV and film, need to let go of beloved properties. I think it's time to let go of Friends.
You?
*And don't even come back at me with The Brady Bunch, Bewitched, The Honeymooners, Car 54, Where Are You or The Beverly Hillbillies because those movies sucked. Do not use those as an example of this sort of thing working, please.

Whether or not the examples you said not to use sucked or not isn't the issue. The fact is that they were made many years later with entirely new people.
I do think it's possible to make a good movie out of a laugh-track, set-based show, mainly because I think it's possible to make a good movie out of anything if the right elements come together.
However, taking "Friends" out of its own world so soon with the SAME PEOPLE would definitely not work.
Plus I don't think it would make nearly as much money as "Sex & the City" did. A lot of people saw that one mostly for the fashion.

Remember the good old days when these type of movies were relegated to TV? The fact is sitcoms stretched to feature length more often resemble Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style than the Sex and the City movie.
But why should we be surprised by this? Hollywood always assumes it can duplicate success, when in reality all they really end up doing is running the formula into the ground.
Not every television show should make the jump to the big screen. Arrested Development, yes. But Friends? I enjoyed the show when it was on but what, exactly, is there left to milk out of that concept? The entire reason successful series like those end is because they've stretched it as far as they possibly could.

I would actually love a big screen version of "Friends." I think with as crazy as life is in general there are several possible directions they could go with a movie. Hell, it would be worth the ten bucks just to see what direction they decide to go with it. Everyone is blowing everything out of proportion so soon, they are just in talks and they have already said they weren't going to do anything without keeping to the goal, integrity, and spirit of the original show. I also think it could only be the original cast of "Friends" who would be able to sell this movie. I don't believe anyone would accept, much less pay for a ticket to see, a "Friends" movie with having just one different person within the "Friends" cast. I'm definately on boards to see it though!

Well great, you cursed yourself by mentioning an 'Everybody Loves Raymond' movie. Now it will happen...thanks!
I loved that title because I always had a simple answer...I don't. If I had the marriage the two main characters had, I would have killed myself years ago...hey, and missed the 'Friends' movie coming out. Win win.
A 'Friends' movie will certainly happen. It's the perfect answer to the 'Sex and the City' movie...a one weekend blowout for...sorry ladies...chicks to get together and see. The next week it drops like a stone.
I don't know how many women I know that went together en masse to see it that Friday, then never mentioned it again. Sadly, my poor sig other missed her chance and actually suggest I see it with her... I hadn't laughed that well in months.

I can think of no one that would see a friends movie not even the families of the cast and especially not Bran and Ang. Also it would destroy what little credibility the actors have left.

I think Hollywood is underestimating the power of the laugh track. "Friends" is nothing like "Sex in the City", "Arrested..", "X-Files" or "Firefly". Those worked because each episode was like a little movie in many different ways.
Now, a Seinfeld movie on the other hand... That would make a killing.

I love Friends, it's one of my favourite shows. But the answer to that question is: God, NO!
A Friends movie would taint the series and would be a paycheck grab and ugh...
I would despise it, I think.
Some things are meant to be on tv and should stay there.

I agree with many of you,
the "Friends" formula of studio sitcom would not translate well to the big screen.
There were episodes during various sweeps weeks where they did shoot on location and even that seemed uncomfortable and weird.
Though I'll add my vote for an Arrested Development film!

I loved watching the Friends series! I hope that if they decide to go on with a movie, they will stick with the studio audience. It would just be akward without the laughs. I think this movie could be a huge hit, IF they make it right! They must have a hell of a good story line to top off their 10 years of episodes. It would be nice to know where the caracters are in their lives, but they should be carefull not to ruined the show that ended so well!

Doy! We so need a F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Movie! I have dreamed for these news for 4 years now. And haters, well dont listen to them they just dont have lives of themselves, they get controlled by other who tell them what to do, so if you hate F.R.I.E.N.D.S. piss off. Us fans will never, ever lose love for our favorite F.R.I.E.N.D.S.; Joey, Monica, Ross, Rachel, Chandler and Phoebe. Thank You!!!

Yes. A friends movie would be perfect just as long as they keep it the way the series was set. 58 Million people watched the last episode of the amazing sitcom a movie would triple that. Sex and the city was aimed at girls where friends was entertaining for everybody.
Thank You!!! Ross, Chandler, Phoebe, Rachel, Joey, Monica.
