Pixar Honors the Girl Who Cried at the 'WALL-E' Teaser
Filed under: Animation, New Releases, Disney, Fandom
This one's a little heartwarming, folks, especially if you're predisposed (as I am) to admiring pretty much everything about the Pixar company. Last fall, a young woman named Courtney saw the WALL-E teaser -- the one where Andrew Stanton talks about the meeting in 1994 where the story was first conceived -- and was reduced to a puddle of tears by its adorableness. Seems she has a soft spot for robots, and in particular for lonely, child-like, wide-eyed robots. So she videoed herself watching the trailer on her computer, knowing it would have the same effect on her again, and then she posted the video on her blog and on YouTube. (We've got it here after the jump.)
The video made its way around the Internets, as these things do, and Courtney began to get e-mails from people within the Pixar family who had seen it and appreciated her enthusiasm. Then one of the film's producers sent her a Pixar jacket as a Christmas gift, along with a note thanking her for the video.
And then they invited her to the film's wrap party in San Francisco.
Courtney was elated, as you might imagine. Pixar flew her and her boyfriend into town and put them up in a hotel. You can read their account of the evening here, and there are plenty of great details (including Brad Bird teasing her, "Why don't you cry at any of MY movies?").
At the event, Andrew Stanton said, "Six months ago, when the first trailer for WALL-E came out, we were only halfway done with the film, and we weren't exactly sure how we were going to get it done. We were exhausted. And then, one day, a movie showed up on YouTube showing a girl watching the trailer for WALL-E. And every time she watched it, she would cry on cue. When we saw that, we knew we were on the right track."
I think it's fantastic that the Pixar team was inspired by Courtney's video -- and, what's more, that they had the graciousness to acknowledge it and thank her for it. You'll notice, too, that Pixar didn't turn it into a publicity moment ("Look how much this girl loves the trailer! The movie must be awesome!!"). As always, Pixar's behavior is almost unbelievably classy and down-to-earth.
Here Courtney's original video. Is it just me, or does she look a lot like Kristen Bell? And is it just me and her, or is WALL-E really, really adorable?

Whatever, Davis. Someone should have filmed you weeping openly at the trailer for "Kit Kittredge: American Girl."

I am sorry, but as an avid reader of this website, this article really got me mad. For one thing, how can you publicize this ridiculously stupid girl? Clearly she is faking, and she's having a hard time faking it. Honestly, who sets up a camera to tape themselves crying at a movie trailer? To top that off, Pixar rewards this chick with free gear. Heartwarming, Eric? No. This girl deserves to be mocked, not rewarded for her behavior. She should be embarassed at herself and you should be embarassed at yourself for writing an article that casts her in such a good light.

I'm certainly embarrassed, and I'm sure Snider is embarrassed too. I'm kinda pissed we didn't go with my original idea, which was to hunt this girl down, throw things at her and capture it all on video. This post was option two, and now I'm soooooooo upset we went with it. Embarrassing for not only Cinematical, but for human beings around the world. Seriously, I think I'm embarrassed to be a human being right now. I'm embarrassed to have feelings, and I'm embarrassed for this girl because she has feelings too.
Maybe we'll just take the post down. That would probably be embarrassing too, though. Drats! What do we do, Will. You're the expert on making people feel like shit. What should we do?

Oh come on! First of all, what's wrong with CINEMATICAL occasionally blogging about something not in the movie news? Its heartwarming. Heck, most newspapers print heartwarming stories that are not "news worthy."
Second, she doesn't seem to be faking it. To me, that is.
Third, she's not pulling off a Chris Crocker.
"LEAVE WALL-E ALOOONE!!!!!!!!!! HE'S A ROBOT!!!!!!!!"

hahah this is ridiculous... she is not really crying is she? what a joke, she is crazy... I am not sure what to make of that video, not sure why I havent seen it before
I can't believe she got all this attention from the Pixar crew, good for her i guess...
If only David Fincher saw my amazement when I watched the Ben Button trailer before Indy and online since, or the Coen's saw my eyes light up when watching Burn After Reading...

I"m not gonna say that I agree with Will because you shouldn't be embarrassed writing about this. It's interesting to hear what Pixar did.
But I do think it's kind of ridiculous that they did this for her.

LOL!!.... Damn ...as much money I spend going to films (I see see at least 2-3 films Per Weekend ina theater!)
..and ALL the times I have cried when I seen a film (Like when I saw "The Happening" & wasted $6.00) someone in a studio should do the same thing for me!!!
(Hell, M. Night Shyamalan should give me my money back as well as director Michael Haneke for "Funny Games"!)!!
Let's see ...the 1st time I saw the WALL-E teaser ...I got a lump in my throat, but hell no one came out to greet me and give me swag!!
I have an AMC Movie Rewards card....I'm lucky just to get free popcorn and a movie!!

My son is autistic and loves movies. He has been impatiently awaiting the arrival of Wall E in theaters and is now chomping at the bit for Toy Story 3 in 2010 and Cars 2 in 2012. He can tell you which actors played which character, when it comes out in theaters and when things come out on dvd. I have not seen the movie (his dad took him) but I did read the book and all I can say is Walmart is bent on taking over the universe!!!
