Trailer for 'The Day The Earth Went Whoa'
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Thrillers, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips
The rule of thumb in this film blogging world of ours is, what goes up must come down. In other words, any trailer that finds itself premiering on YouTube can only find itself taken down from YouTube. So, for now, let us offer you what appears to be the teaser for this winter's big-budget remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, in which an alien visitor (Keanu Reeves) gives us Earth denizens a hefty heads-up that if we don't straighten up our act, he and his giant robot friend will do it for us ...
Now, I may or may not be entering spoiler territory with this following paragraph, so feel free to skip it (in that case, long story short: also stars Jennifer Connelly and due in theaters on December 12th) -- BUT, from what I can recall reading at one point, our main man's angle this time around is not concerns of nuclear warfare (that's SO 1951!), but rather more environmentally-fixated priorities. Who knew that between this, WALL-E, and The Happening that the big H'wood cared so much about the state of our planet.
On the other hand, pitched properly, green can only equal more green in their eyes.
[thanks to Film Web]
(UPDATE: the Quicktime trailer appears to have gone up.)

Having not seen the original (I know), can't speak of the blasphemy involved, but I'm all for studio event films, which this looks to be.
Then again, I am often a sucker.

This could be pretty interesting. Good looking sfx, an intriguing plot, and Keanu Reeves playing the role he was born for might add up to a really good film.

The original is one of my all time favorite scifi films...but I hafta say, this looks good. Sidenote: Don Hamm and that kid from HEROES, FTW.
[Erm, sorry: JON Hamm. :)]

Actually, that little boy is played by Jaden Smith, Will Smith's son. The little boy from 'Heroes' is played by Noah Gray-Cabey: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1370821/

I'm 100% not on Board for this Re-Make!! This 100% BS and just pure blasphemy!!!
Keanu Reeves as Klaatu...LOL....ROFL....Man that is just the wrong type of casting....and I guess Jennifer Connelly needed to pay the rent that damn bad!
I have read all about this Re-make...laughing at every turn...laughing at every bit of casting ...now I see the trailer I just can't believe it was really done!!!
WHY CAN'T HOLLYWOOD JUST CLEAN UP THE "ORGINIAL" PRINT AND RE-RELEASE IT IN THEATERS..??
The "Original" was Produced in the aftermath of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the development and use of the first hydrogen bombs, the film strongly and iconically addresses issues of violence, politics, and the fear of global annihilation..
In 1995, The Day the Earth Stood Still was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".
In 2008, it was voted as the fifth best science-fiction ever made as part of the AFI's 10 Top 10.
MY GOD HOLLYWOOD HOW CAN YOU RE-MAKE A CLASSIC OF THIS NATURE...ESP SOMETHING THAT IS CONSIDERED culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".???
I WILL NOT WASTE 1 DIME ON THIS CRAP!!
Thank God Michael Rennie & Robert Wise arfe not here to see this crap!

And if the idea of a remake of the classic science fiction parable "The Day the Earth Stood Still" isn't bad enough for you, to add insult to injury, Keanu will play Klaatu, portrayed in the original by Michael Rennie.
Do they honestly expect us to believe him as the savior of our planet? God help us all.

Looking good there. Kind of a mix between War of the World's and I am Legend. But the threath of destruction on accounts of enviromentalism is dumb, if that's what's in. Why, aren't we cuddly humans part of the enviroment as well? Don't we deserve as much preservation as any species? Just sayin', they'd better have a good argument.

As a fan of the original movie... this teaser made me go "WTF!?" initially. It's incredibly obvious that they do not wish to rehash the original material but to produce a quasi-"reboot". Okay, fine. Now that I KNOW that, from seeing this teaser, I can approach this film from a similar angle.
I was actually excited to see a re-creation of the original film. Now I'm more curious as to what they DO with the material.

If that's the case, I highly doubt that you were the first. Keanu's notorious for making us great minds think alike.

Why do people cry over remakes? i mean really, are you that much of a petulant child that gets all upset cause someone else is playing with his favourite toy?? grow up, movies are movies and old movies get remade, big deal!
I personally love remakes, i love the originals and sometimes if done right (dawn of the dead among many others) don’t detract from the original but give us an update to an already great story.
The thing currently ranks as my favourite all time film, nestled alongside Alien, now i own original signed posters of both films along with various other collectors crap and when i heard they were remaking the thing, i didn’t go all "there raping my childhood" bullshit like you crybaby fan-atics, i went cool, hopefully I’ll get a chance to see a re-imagining of a really cool storyline set in a modern world with some great sfx, what the fucks wrong with that?? if its shit, its shit, if its class, happy days i'll buy it on bluray but it will in no way detract from the original which will always remain my no.1 film
so to sum up, wise the feck up, who gives a shit if they remake this, as far as im concerned the original was a great movie and this looks pretty sweet!

I am usually against remakes, especially of iconic films like "The Day the Earth Stood Still." That having been said, making an environmental version of this story may not be such a bad idea, though I must admit, Reeves hardly has the screen presence of Michael Renny.

its called dumbing down the art,and catering to the lowest common denominator of the audience.
Some poor fella doesnt get Citizen Kane ?
Lets do it with Pauly Shore as Kane and lets have him explain Rosebud at the very beginning
or lets do a Rashomon remake and have the theme of subjectivity explained to us by Gedde Watanabe with some crayola drawings (Kabuki theater ? no way, lets get Sam the eagle from the Jim Henson factory)
or lets have a remake of Fahrenheit 451 with 50 cents doing this for 90 minutes
"Books are not good"
"books are evil "
"this is called sarcarasam..sacrasm ?...it means were kidding."
Never mind The seventh seal,8 1/2 and Vertigo
its already happening way too much already, and were letting Hollywood get their way so that every Cletus, the slack-jawed yokel understands everything that used to require questioning, constructive criticism or personal introspection.
One of the consequences of this is that now we're paying much moolah to have Coke ZERO ads before the film with TALKING TONGUES!!!
remember folks,if you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time.
