Darren Aronofsky Helming 'Robocop' Remake?

What could make a remake of an edgy '80s classic worthy of our valuable time? A top-notch director, of course. Within a Hollywood Reporter article focused on MGM's new chairman, Mary Parent (and all the franchises she's kicking into high gear) is one heck of a good name drop. According to the studio, Darren Aronofsky has stopped by to talk about helming the Robocop remake. Now stop and savor how brilliant Aronofsky's Robocop would be. Doesn't that feel nice? Don't get too excited, as it's probably too good to be true, but what if? Not only could he actually make a film that could rival the bitter satire of Paul Verhoven's original, but it would actually give him some long overdue recognition and box office success. (Yes, I know we film nuts know him like he's our best friend -- but have you actually discussed The Fountain around the water cooler lately?)
Aronofsky has been dancing around big budget movie making for years. I don't know how many comics adaptations he's been attached to over the years -- I can think of Batman, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Ronin off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure there's more. Robocop really does seem right up his alley. Let this idea actually come together. I think audiences deserve it.

Seth Rogen + Green Arrow = no
Darren Aronofsky + Robocop = yes
I wasn't really that interested until I heard this. Why remake this unless you can be creative about it? I think I can expect something interesting from Aronofsky.

How about Frank Miller? He wrote the guy in the original flicks. have him do a grainy, bloody retake on his own character.

The directors ruined Robocop, not Miller, don't comment if you don't know the whole story.

I think that this would be an excellent pairing of talent and story.
What I'm curious of is if Aronofsky would be as brutally violent in his version (remember Robocop was the first non sex film to get the X rating due to violence which prompted the introduction of the NC17 rating) or would he decide to take a quieter more introverted look at the man in the machine.
I'd like to see something more subtle.
BTW: Actually I'm constantly talking about The Fountain around the water cooler, which is why I have no friends.

I totally agree with Riley Freeman. I'm so sick of the watered down movies they make so they can get teenage viewers. Most horror movies are coming out pg-13 now, and how is that horror? How about some movie for the Ah-dults here?
man, this movie won't be **** without the violence. that's the whole point of the movie. at the time it was made it was futuristically showing that violence was going to be more common in the streets - well, we all know that's true anyway. If you're not gonna stick to the original premise, why don't you come up with your own idea instead of bastardizing someone elses story, while saying it's the same story. If it's really different, call it something else.
violence, violence, violence, yeah !!! - I love cinematic violence anyway. I loved 300. When robocop came out, I loved it too. If somebody wants to see/make a movie about the man inside the machine, well that's a different story completely anyway, isn't it.

The only way I'd see a "Robocop" remake is if it had an interesting director, and this would DEFINITELY qualify.

Is this another "PTA to direct MGS" rumour ? This would be sweet, but I'm not getting too excited just yet.

I'm not saying I don't like gore, I freakin' love it. But the Gory ultraviolent version of the story has been done. So I'd like to see something different, which I think Aronofsky is ideally suited for.
That is if this is all really happening and not just some rumor.

It is hard to get too excited about a studio meeting -- but hey, if they met with Aronofsky, perhaps we can at least take it as a sign they recognize the strength of the original, and want one in a similar vein?
Then again, they're remaking Red Dawn so what do I know...
