Paramount Remaking 'The Monster Squad'?!

Yes, the horrifying idea is true. Spooky Dan over at Bloody-Disgusting.net sat down with Rob Cohen, ostensibly to chat about The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and a startling bombshell was dropped. Cohen revealed that Paramount has snagged the rights to the 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad, and plans on remaking it in fairly short order. Cohen is going to produce, but isn't interested in directing. The Monster Squad is a delightful horror-comedy about a group of middle school students obsessed with Stephen King, werewolves, and vampires. In a tidy plot twist, Dracula suddenly appears in their calm suburb, calls forth a few familiar minions, and makes plans to take over the world at midnight. It's the movie that proved, once and for all, that Wolfman has "nards." After languishing in cultish obscurity (and imprisoned on VHS), the movie had a resurgence once all us children of the '80s came of age, and is now available in a wonderful DVD package.
All of this is why the flick ... doesn't need to be remade. It's the perfect product of the '80s, one of those snarky movies the decade was rich in. Obviously Paramount is thinking that its ongoing popularity makes it an instant hit; I'm sure they will lamely explain this as a way to introduce the movie to the younger generation. But that's why we have DVD. I can introduce it to my future children just fine, thanks.
I never thought I would live to see the day when my entire childhood was remade. Surely Space Camp and The Goonies can't be far behind. What does that leave? Only Flight of the Navigator and An American Tail. Surely, the latter is being tossed around. I mean, two-dimensional animation doesn't speak to today's youth. Make it stop, Hollywood! Make it stop!

I re-watched Flight of the Navigator not too long ago. I was surprised at how well it still holds up. The first hour, anyway.

How dare they! Is nothing in this world sacred? What's stopping a remake of the Wizard of Oz? Certainly todays youth can't comprehend the use of sepia tone and tornado's not done in CGI
I'm completely on your side on this one. Leave the cute kids and this charming tale alone. It stands the test of time just fine thank you. Of course we can't trust Speilberg after what he did to E.T., so no doubt Goonies will follow closely on Monster Squads remade heels. CRIPES!

I was thinking of the remake prospects just the other day (while watching The Monster Squad and questioning why I had not yet ordered my Stephen King Rules tee) and was wondering as to who owns all the character licenses these days? I thought I recall that being one issue as to why its DVD was so overdue?
Anyways. If they kept the edge, I'd be okay with a remake as it will expose more to the original. Somehow I doubt they'll keep the name Fat Kid, the children cursing, the bully calling them a fag or Dracula picking up a little girl and yelling into her face, "Give me the amulet, you bitch!"

They can't remake the Monster Squad! They just can't. "Wolfman's Got Nards" is the best line ever. Please don't screw around with campy 80s perfection.

Flight of the Navigator would make a good remake if someone would only give it a plot. Kid gets picked up by aliens, dropped off 8 years later, kid gets picked up by the government, kid gets picked up again by aliens, goes for a 2 hour ride in a spaceship, gets dropped off in his own time. That's not a story.
Almost anyone can make this into a better movie.
Monster Squad, on the other hand, they need to keep their mitts off... unless of course it will somehow benefit the careers of Shane Black and Fred Dekker.

Well there goes my plan.
I thought it would be a cool idea to update the movie for a comic mini-series then do a follow-up mini-series/sequel set in the now.
I guess I won't be working on that anymore.

THE DUMBEST IDEA ON PLANET EARTH!!!
"The Monster Squad" The Monster Squad two-disc 20th anniversary special edition DVD was released by Lionsgate on July 24, 2007, and contains a wide range of special features including a 5-part 90 minute retrospective documentary, 2 audio commentaries, deleted scenes, the theatrical trailer, a tv spot, animated storyboards, and more. Since the release date of the DVD it has remained on the Amazon.com top seller list as of October 7, 2007
The special edition DVD also makes a few references to the death of Brent Chalem, who played "Horace", of pneumonia in 1997. Chalem's childhood film career failed to generate much success, into adulthood, forcing him to become a paralegal
